Big Mike’s Philly Steaks & Sub

Odd that when I left for lunch, I planned on picking up something light. Instead, I ended up eating at Big Mike’s Philly Steaks & Sub in El Segundo on Main. The first time I tried Big Mike’s I wasn’t planning on going there either, and was pleasantly suprised at the lunch time offerings. Since first going there, I have been back a few times, usually on impulse. Today I was early enough to find a seat, by the time I left around 12:15 the line was to the door and seats were scarce.

I usually order the #2 combo which is a chicken cheese steak with a side of fries and a drink for a little under $8. The chicken used in the chicken cheese steak is all white meat and is chopped on the griddle just like the steak sandwiches. Sometimes I go for the hot peppers, but the spice is a bit overpowering so today I opted to just have the sweet peppers. The chicken cheese steak is also topped with shredded lettuce, tomatoes and pickles.

Eating the cheese steak is a job in of itself. After a couple of bites, the bottom fell out of the sandwich and about a quarter of the chicken ended up in the basket. It wasn’t such a bad thing, I could finally get my mouth around it and I cleaned up the fallen chicken with a fork. The fries are decent, nothing special about the cooking method and there aren’t any spices on them.

I still haven’t tried a proper cheese steak at Big Mike’s, but by the line out the door, they seem to be worth coming back for.

Big Mike’s tends to be a little too generous with the meat, which causes the bread to sometimes fall apart. I suppose it justifies the price too - not that they’re expensive compared to other cheesesteak places in LA, but certainly when compared to places in Philadelphia, where they come as cheap as $3 or $4 and still taste better than almost any place out here that costs twice as much.

That said, I usually have a #1 - cheese wit’ and garlic fries - but at their Hermosa Beach location (on Hermosa, just north of Pier Ave.). Best steak I’ve had outside of Philly. If only they sold Philly hard pretzels. South Street (in Westwood Village) does, but their steak sucks.

Not all That. Where were the essential oils? The Grease. Kinda of bland and the meat tasted a bit funny. Bread not crispy enouh for me.

I have eaten at Big Mikes quite a few time and I can say they have one heck of a good sandwich. I get the Philly Cheese Steak with hot peppers. Make my mouth water thinking about it.
