Kyushu Ramen

I think I’m falling in love with someone else. I am cheating on Daikokuya, my favorite tonkotsu ramen shop until now. I still LOVE Daikokuya, but maybe I was getting bored with the same routine. I was just looking for something new to rock my ramen world.

Today, I discovered Kyushu Ramen in Van Nuys, a small ramen shop that specializes in the Kyushu style of ramen, bathed in a rich, flavorful, cloudy broth made of boiled pork bones (tonkotsu). Theirs was deep, full of flavor and blended perfectly with the ramen noodles and accompaniments–melt-in-your-mouth roast pork, seaweed, sesame seeds, egg, pickled ginger, fish cake, bamboo shoots and spinach.

Tried to go to Daikokuya for lunch today, but the parking situation was so horrible that we went to our alternate ramen place: Orochon Ramen. Their gimmick is 9 different degrees of spiciness to the soup. Order the hottest one and finish it within half an hour and you picture goes up on the wall of bravery. If you haven’t tried this place yet, give it a shot. I recommend starting off with level 4 or level 5. (The greater the number, the milder the soup. I ordered a level 3 and my soup looked orange from the spiciness.)

Overall, ramen is quite good. The soup and pork aren’t as good as daikokuya’s, but Orochon makes up for it with good side dishes (gyoza and half or order of fried rice). They don’t have as much variety in their menu as Daikokuya, but that’s why I recommend Orochon as an alternate.

Kyushu Ramen used to be a great spot when the former owner still had it. They had the same waitresses for years and the food was always great. Although many are the same dishes, the food is not the same. They’re trying to make it much more Asian Fusion and it’s a shame. Moreover, their staff is incompetant - they can’t even take orders correctly and just when I talked my brother into giving it ‘one more chance,’ they disappointed again…not only did they keep trying to squish all of the customers together (literally, I bumped elbows with my dining neighbors), but also (and more importantly) the couple next to me found a BUG in their food. Because of such poor service, my brother said they probably wouldn’t even comp their meal…They didn’t. They said, “Oh, sorry about that…we’ll only charge you half…” The young couple was floored and I think waited to talk to the owner, who didn’t seem to be bothered or surprised that bugs were in the dishes served (maybe it’s a normal occurance?). Needless to say, we didn’t stick around, paid for our drinks, cancelled our order and will never be back.
