Monster of a Meal: Doughboys on 3rd.

I am thoroughly convinced that all of Hollywood eats lunch at Doughboys on 3rd between Crescent Heights and La Cienega. When I go out to lunch I generally like to eavesdrop on the conversations going on next to me. Today at Doughboys, on my left we had the hot young model/actress smiling as the agent she dined with blabbed incessantly about his new Porsche Carrera. On my right was a little known actor from the series Buffy the Vampire Slayer slurping down beef soup. My point is, if you are interested in learning more about the film industry, by all means take a seat at Doughboys. However, if you are completely fed up with agents, actresses, producers and other members of the Hollywood “scene,” then this might not be the best lunchspot for you.
The decor of Doughboys walks the fine line between a greasy spoon diner and a quaint bakery. On one wall there is a giant cigar shaped baguette with grey smoke pouring from its spout. Is it a cigar? Is it a baguette? Does it matter? The waitresses are all super cute in a punk rock way, and very attentive. The menu is incredibly extensive. From all types of breakfast items to soups, salads, and sandwiches. Ok that doesn’t sound that extensive, but trust me, each of these items is not what you would expect.
For instance the scramble with “dirty eggs” (grits, shredded pork, eggs, caramelized onions and potatoes) puts a new tasty spin on that ol’ breakfast classic the scramble. Or maybe the French dip which you can have “White Trash Style” (slathered with cheese and bacon) Your arteries wont like you, but your stomach definitely will.
Today I ordered something called “The Monster,” thanks to the spunky waitresses’ recommendation. The Monster is best described as a hybrid pizza-type open faced sandwich consisting of emmental cheese, roast beef and onions layered on top of a round pancake bread. On the side you get a small plate with 3 cups: lettuce, tomatoes and a side of horseradish sauce. I immediately dumped all these toppings onto the monster, I mean after all it is called “The Monster” and should be gooey slimy and full of tomatoes right? Eating this beast is no small feat. After trying to pick it up like a taco for a good 10 minutes, I gave up, and wielding my silver fork and knife slew the delicious creature by silverware. The taste is somewhat like a cheesesteak sandwich but slightly less filling due to the pancake-bread instead of a traditional french roll. Doughboys serves up one hot monster let me tell you. I recommend it to anyone who A) doesn’t mind getting a little messy when eating B) likes tasty food in a casual atmosphere. Next time I will definitely have to leave room for dessert since
Doughboys is in fact a bakery and proudly displays some sexy cupcakes, scones and muffins in a small case under their coffee bar.
The prices are reasonable (between 7$-10$) and the service is great although sassy at times. After all, everyone working at doughboys is most likely an aspiring actress, producer or writer.

Mmmmmm…yep, this place is goooood. The large cups of good coffee were worthwhile, as was Scramble #2 with tofu. I took him 5 bagels and all of them were damn delicious.
