The Real Mexican Revolution: Lares on Pico

While the stretch of Pico boulevard between the 405 and the ocean in Santa Monica seems to be a haven for Asian Massage parlours, it is also home to what may be the finest Mexican restaurant in all of Los Angeles.

I am talking about Lares, a two story dim grotto, featuring not only the crunchiest chips made from real tortillas but authentic Mole (chocolate spicy sauce) chicken, a Mexican classic which is usually bastardized by faux-mexican restaurants in America.

Opening the gigantic wooden door at the front of this unassuming restaurant’s exterior is quite a challenge, but in the end a small price to pay for such a tasty trip into the realm of Mexican cuisine. This particular Saturday was extremely crowded with people from all walks of life. I sat down with a couple of friends and after one incredibly strong (and cheap 5$) margarita, I felt the spirit of Zapata come alive within my belly. Seriously, after 2 more of these salty drinks I could’ve started the great revolution of Pico blvd.

The salsa that comes with the tortilla chips is spicy but not too hot (although i generally like things on the spicy side) Two Mariachis roamed through the small passageways between tables and before I say anything about the musical entertainment, I have to admit that I am not a big fan of Mariachis in general. I’ve always thought of them as the Mexican equivalent of mimes. Just as I don’t want a mime next to me pulling an imaginary rope when I go to a French restaurant, I don’t really want a guy strumming a guitar in my ear while I’m trying to eat a taco. So, that being said…the Mariachis at Lares are slightly out of tune and a bit loud for the small area of the restaurant. They will however play “It’s a Small World” on their classical guitars if the price is right…and if you are into that sort of thing.

I ordered the beef combination plate which includes a taco, burrito and enchilada with rice and beans on the side. The plate that arrived at the table was a Mexican smorgasbord of flavors. The taco was definitely the best part of the trio: crispy and full of shredded beef with tasty jack cheese and juicy lettuce. By the time I made it through all three items on the combination plate I couldn’t even bare to look at food anymore. My stomach and wallet were happy when the bill came.

Lares is an amazing Mexican restaurant for those who are interested in the authentic (try the mole enchilada), or those who just want to have good ol’ tacos. The carnitas are also incredible! Almost all of the entrees are served with rice and beans and nothing is too expensive ($8-14) But be warned, Lares gets damn crowded on the weekends and although you can call and make a reservation, the reservations are sometimes ignored depending on how many angry people are waiting by the front door.

Discussion

  1. Another note about Lares, there is an upstairs and a downstairs each with their own bar and separate waiting list. I prefer the upstairs, it is roomier and lighter, and it’s kind of nice to sit against the huge window on Pico.

I agree on the mole enchiladas, one of my favorites.

  2. Lares is completely average, you must not get out of the Westside very much if you think it is the best Mexican in Los Angeles

  3. Well Sherry I would have to disagree with you on that one…but we all are entitled to our own tastes. Maybe you can enlighten me with some of your anti-westside knowledge?
Also a note to those who still want to try Lares for themselves…it is currently closed due to a fire in the kitchen so call before going.

  5. Authentic food with a transporting environment, & if Gino makes it in, the live flamenco is completely seductive. I have been going to Lares several times a months since a friend turned me on to it in ‘94. Juan is the best!
The entire staff is amazing…look forward to your reopening.

  6. As a mexican-american I find Lares to be truly authentic. I travel from Valencia at least a couple times a year to enjoy the great food. I enjoy the bastardized mexican (americanized)as well but Lares is really a treat. I suggest you try it.
