As you may have noticed, the weather last weekend was amazing, and it looks to be warm again this weekend. Last Sunday my fiancee and I took advantage of the weather and headed to Malibu’s Surfrider Beach for a picnic. Instead of assembling sandwiches and bagging chips, I headed to Trader Joe’s to pick up some goodies for the cooler.

Here is the shopping list, I think the whole picnic was around $20:

  • Package of “Just Shrimp” cooked shrimps
  • Bag of “Just Leaves” romaine lettuce
  • Bottle of Caesar Dressing
  • Package of grapes
  • Package of Lemon Crisp Cookies
  • Bag of Flatbread
  • Small tub of hummous
  • Bottle of Limeade
  • Bottle of Tea Java

The main dish was the shrimp lettuce wraps with caesar dressing. Simple enough to assemble on the beach. Just lay the shrimp lengthwise inside the romaine lettuce leaf, drizzle some dressing and eat like a taco. TJs has some “Just Chicken” and of course tofu if you don’t like shrimp.

For drinks and as a off shoot of SoCalorie’s hunt for Arnold Palmer, we made a variation of the citrus/iced tea concoction using limeade instead of lemonade. I enjoyed it and my fiancee named the drink a “Tiger Woods”, try ordering one of those around town.

The hummous, flatbread and grapes are self explanatory, but the cookies deserve a special mention. Lemon desserts are some of my favorites, and the cookies have a great tangy tasty, with thin strips of chocolate splashed on top. I had a hard time not devouring the entire container right there.

If you do go to Surfrider Beach for a picnic, I suggest driving north past the pier, go to the light and make a U-turn. Park (for free) in the dirt under the trees and walk through the parking lot to the north end of the beach near the houses.
