Chloe Stirs and Sizzles
Tuesday, May 24, 2005 18:13Chloe is such an aesthetically pleasing name. It’s in a place mostly unknown to me–Playa del Rey. The interior of Chloe was a little cramped and the acoustics somewhat frenetic and slightly unbearable for my tastes, but that was cured by the good company and libations.
Half a bottle of chardonnay accompanied our meals. My friend, the one who makes truffles and cooks feasts frequently, had carrot soup with cilantro pesto, which he shared with me (yum–I’m not a fan of very sweet carrot soups, and this one had just the right amount of savory to it that I appreciate) and a plate of mountain elk and mushrooms that had pureed sweet potato on top. Mountain elk, yes. He speared a good-sized chunk onto my plate and I tasted what was a very smooth, exquisite meat, not at all gamey or strange like I had imagined. The mushrooms on his plate were also delish.
My own plate was trout, with a rich buttery almond sauce over it, along with wilted spinach. I sopped up some of the juices and sauce from the trout with the fresh bread at our table.
We ordered the dessert we saw on the cover of Los Angeles magazine. It sounded best. I couldn’t even tell you the name of it now–but I can say that it was a chocolate cake, baked into a little mug, with a gooey chocolatey middle, and a spoon resting on the side with a dollop of marshmallow creme–made to resemble a hot chocolate.
That completed our first mission to an expensive restaurant together because on budgets like ours, checking out the various delectable offerings of this city sometimes requires saving a little money ahead of time!
