LA Times Bellies Up to Pappy & Harriet’s
Thursday, May 26, 2005 16:04LA Times writer Scott Timberg travels to Twentynine Palms to appraise the eats and drinks in the desert.
Not surprisingly Timberg takes a shine to cowboy bar Pappy & Harriet’s:
“…a locally famous high-desert outpost where anyone from Lucinda Williams to Calexico might drop in and play. A friend saw a Johnny Cash tribute band there recently, and it’s hard to imagine a better spot for that. The bar collects shaggy bikers, crew-cut Marines, lots of desert rats in beards and cowboy hats and a few eavesdropping urbanites.
I doubt many go to Pappy and Harriet’s strictly for the food. Still, as someone who experiences L.A.’s near-vegetarian tendencies as a type of purgatory, I found this place to be red-meat heaven. “Our tender meat is smoked and grilled over our outdoor mesquite fire,” the menu says. Unable to decide between the baby back ribs and the beef tri-tip, I ordered a platter with both and was glad not to have had to take sides on the matter.”
Memorial Day weekend may not be the best time to pilgrimage to the high desert, but if you’re in no mood to grill, Pappy & Harriet’s has a great big bar-b-cue and picnic tables in the backyard.

It seems that anyone cool within a 50 mile radius works at Pappy & Harriet’s.

Whenever I’ve ventured out there I end up wondering where everyone else drove from. Hey, tomorrow night, Giant Bear, a Memphis-based roots rock band, that sounds like “Leonard Cohen with a Beatles’ backbeat,” is playing Pappy’s.
