How exciting, even if they're not homemade! I'll be casing the TJ Holiday Fearless Flyer in November. I love the little Belgian chocolates TJ's gets around that time of year too.

every year around the holidays, Trader Joe's brings in baumkuchenspitzen. they are not even remotely as good as the real thing, but they'll give you an idea.

i actually have a recipe from an obscure german holiday cookbook -- it's incredibly complicated, involving painting batter on in thin layers and broiling each one for a miniscule amount of time.

one of these days. . .

Hi Miriam, Baumkuchenspitzen sounds incredible! Thanks for the information. It looks like Japanese baumkuchen is made with a a much less sweet hot cake mix. I'm a chocolate and almond paste fan so I'll have to hunt in L.A. for baumkuchenspitzen although I imagine my chances of finding it freshly made are dim.

Great photo series, toyohara (hiroki). Are you a king of Japanese Party Cuisine?? Your 'Complete Guide to Flowing Somen' is an interesting read as well. Did you let your dog eat all your paella?
