FYI - New Concept must have gotten old- they have changed owners. looks like this sunday was the opening day for a new restraunt called 'elite'. Lots of plants with red sashes and an overflow parking lot. We skipped it and went to the Ramen house in the same strip mall. Located under the stairwell Foo Foo Tei. it always hits the spot. Nice noodles with an odd twists (who ever heard of menudo ramen?)

We don't get out to the Monterey Park/Alhambra/San Gabriel area very often, but we finally got over to Triumphal Palace (which was very tasty but we forgot a camera). Anyone have any thoughts on best dim sum these days? Triumphal Palace? Mission 261? New Concept? Or still nostalgic for NBC Seafood/Ocean Star?

Hey Jonah,

Just found this great review, and then saw your question. I live in the LA area also (and have been Dim Summing ;) for most of my life as well, LOL. My top favorite Dim Sum restaurants have actually dwindled to just one :( -

* Sea Harbor
3939 N. Rosemead Blvd.
Rosemead, CA 91770
626-288-3939

(and No, I don't work for them :P). Sea Harbor is just THE freshest ingredients, all the Dim Sum is made-to-your-order FRESH. It's great stuff! They have quality, new fusion dishes along with classics, and they have Seasonal Menus (so they change it up slightly every season). Highly recommended. (^_^)

On a sidenote: It's sad to see the passing (degrading of quality) of many of the old-school "Top Dim Sum" restaurants (Ocean Star & NBC Seafood (both in Monterey Park)). They used to be the best around, but their quality has dwindled drastically (IMHO due to stupid Price Wars & undercutting around the SG Valley)).

Bad/no service can definitely ruin a meal, no matter how good the food is.

Which places around town are worth checking out Eddie?

Don't know if anyone reads this post, but hopefully I will provide additional incentive NOT to go to this crap restaurant. Inattentive service is expected at Cantonese restaurants. But, this place is just stupid. Not only did I wait 30 minutes for a table, but they called my number and then told me they retracted it and then crossed it out. Had I not pressed to be seated they would have just let me keep sitting. (basically they gave my seat away to some Cantonese speaking foursome.) The service is horrible. No one came to ask what tea we wanted for 20 minutes (it is customary in dim sum restaurants for the waiter to immediately ask what tea you want). I eat dim sum practically every other week and have done so most of my life. So as far as food goes, this place is average. The service makes it a horrible experience. I will NEVER go there again.

You have no idea... I get sad just thinking about the upcoming posts I'm working on. Most of them will be my farewell visits.

On top of that, there is only ONE sushi place where I'm moving to. Two Chinese places, but both are express style. Oh Foodies... Pray for me.

The diaper incident definitely surprised me. The wait staff at New Concept is close to useless. I don't think they'd try prevent a fist fight from breaking out in the dining room.

Mission 261 is so clean and classy. I'd take my in-law there IF he could be pressed to eat dim sum. I think my mom would dig the 70-ish wood paneling and the dishware at New Concept. She'd be peeved about the service, however.

Aren't you going to miss the food here??

OH... MY... GOODNESS... I can not believe that woman actually changed diapers at the table!!! Changing stations in restrooms or not, that just should not happen out at the dining area! Did the service staff not notice or just not care?

I think you and I both enjoyed really good dim sum today, but I probably got better service at Mission 261. Oh, and you're right... it is overly air-conditioned in there. I think that's why I drink so much hot tea whenever I go there.
