Boule for Father’s Day: Gelato, Sorbet

Last week I had Boule Bakery’s phenomenal lychee-mint sorbet. It’s like tasting a delicate tropical blossom while blazing down a snow-covered hill on a plastic sled with no mittens. I also enjoyed the chocolate gelato made with “a little bit of honey.”

The Boule staff was wearing small red and purple rubber visors and they were more friendly than usual. The visors appeared incongruous with the dominantly minty Tiffany & Co. museum-like atmosphere. I suppose I’m glad they’re starting to enjoy themselves since it can get un-fun pretty quickly in Boule. I once pronounced macaron as “macaroon,” rhymed with “spoon.” The woman behind the counter rolled her eyes and pronounced it correctly for me. [*crickets* at the pastry case during that transaction]

Really though, Boule’s my morphine drip, they could throw down a few dirty mattresses, curse me out the whole time, and I’d still go in there.

I had high hopes for Boule when it first opened, but it’s so overpriced and the stuffy museum-like atmosphere and holier-than-thou attitude of the workers was all such a turn-off. If I’m paying close to $4 for a croissant the size of my thumb I expect at least a friendly smile. I’d much rather get my calories from Susina down the street on Beverly.

I love giving and receiving Susina’s box of Italian cookies. So yum. I also like the fact that this summer, after 11PM, Susina’s breakfast pastries are 50% off.

Yeah. I’ve had some unpleasant customer service experiences at Boule and I’ve still blown far too much cash there considering. The one really sweet young Boule guy I haven’t seen in a while. But that croissant is pretty standard size isn’t it? I occasionally buy almond croissants from La Brea Bakery for $4.95. *sigh*
