Where to find ribs?

Sunday, June 12, 2005 13:39

With July 4 BBQ around the corner, how do people like to prepare their ribs? And where do you go when you would rather just buy them?

My circle of friends have their opinions about rib joints and I’d be curious to hear from the readership and contributers here at LA.foodblogging.

One friend lives in the Valley and is a fan of :

Dr. Hoggly Woggly’s Tyler Texas BBQ
8136 Sepulveda Blvd (near Roscoe)
Van Nuys, CA 91402-4305
Phone: (818) 902-9046

This person over at Chowhound seems to agree while this person does not.

Since I don’t live in the Valley and only make it out there occasionally, I haven’t tried it yet.

Another friend swears by Mr. Cecil’s.

Mr. Cecil’s California Ribs
12244 Pico Blvd (Amherst Avenue)
Los Angeles, CA 90064
(310) 442-1550

The Chowhounders seem to disagree.

I haven’t yet tried it myself to form an opinion but my friend is rather a foodie so I’d take it as a good sign.

I’ve driven past The Pig a number of times and have tried it once so far and found it okay. Readers can, of course, decide for themselves.

The Pig
612 N La Brea Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90036 View Map
(323) 935-1116
Cross Street: Clinton Street

More disagreement among the Chowhounds.

My current favorite is Zeke’s Smokehouse.

My search of Chowhound shows reports only from 2002.

I can only say, I like it and I have a friends who do as well. My favorite item is the Kansas City style spare ribs.

As far as making ribs myself, as an apartment dweller, I use an oven to bake them. I give them over to a few hours or overnight marinade consisting of store bought BBQ sauce (I’m sure totally offending purists!) mixed with Kern’s mango nectar or orange juice. I bake them in the oven at 350 until they look ready.

Thanks in advance for any other recipes, I’m sure our readers who are planning a July 4 BBQ would welcome ideas!

I’m a huge fan of Phillips Bar-B-Que in Leimert Park. Their sauce is far and away the best I’ve found here in LA. Be sure to try the links if you stop by for the ribs.

About a year ago Phillips took over Leo’s location on Crenshaw just off the 10. I’ve not been there since, so I can’t say if they keep up the original location’s high standards, but I was a huge Leo’s fan, so I’m optimistic that the new location is at least passable.

I make my ribs (baby back) in the oven too, a method that I’ve found to produce really, really tasty and tender ribs. I marinate mine w/BBQ sauce or use a dry rub and slow bake them at 275 for a couple hours.

If you prefer to buy, I like Uncle Andre’s in Studio City, 11715 Moorpark st, Studio City, 91604. (818) 763-8414.

Couldn’t agree more about Zeke’s, which is consistently excellent, and my second favorite BBQ in town.

My first favorite wins, only because it’s such a ittle-known place:
Greece’s Barbecue 901 S. La Brea Los Angeles, CA 90036 (310) 822-6026. That’s a block north of Olympic on LaBrea.

Greece’s is a clean little dive, with seating for six(?), you get it to go. He serves a very basic St. Louis style barbecue menu: a sweet-hot sauce cooked into ribs, chicken, links, potato salad, white bread, styrofoam clam shells. Greece is the pitmaster there, and he’s a friendly, quitet professional who’s been at this location for ten years easily, having moved there from south central after the Rodney King riots (I think that’s the story).

Sadly, I have very little input on local BBQ. For cooking at home, consider ordering some of Rudy’s BBQ Sauce from Austin. I had it when I was out there a couple months ago and the sauce was really good. Lots of pepper and just the right tang.

I really want to try Zeke’s smoked chicken!

Decided to try out Greece’s on the recommendation of “Why we type.”

For $20 got 12 ribs, potato salad, BBQ beans and four slices of bread to go.

    Very meaty ribs!

The place is small and easy to miss. It is across from the car wash in a small corner pocket mall.

Really!? We went there yesterday for lunch for the same reason. At around 1PM the doors were locked and nobody was behind the counter. However the TV on the wall was blaring. It was like a scene from “28 Days Later.”

I thought maybe WWT was just tickling our ribs, har. We headed to Tahoe Galbi as our Plan B and we weren’t disappointed.

About Dr. Hogly Wogly’s… I’ve given that place two chances - just to be fair. And both times I was disappointed; it’s really over-rated, in my opinion.

I found the meat not very flavorful and dry.

If you oven cook your own ribs, try cooking them between 200 and 250 for several hours. The lower temperature and longer time really helps.
