Candy Crate’s Retro Box
Wednesday, June 22, 2005 11:51Father’s Day at our house was made sugarier this year thanks to my sweet tooth, my wife’s dogged determination to shop online, and the Hesperia-based Candy Crate. Candy Crate is like a lot of online candy shops, but the difference here is: they’re local, so your order spends less time getting sticky on the back of a UPS truck.
While most of us don’t need the internet to buy our Wonka Candy, the reason to look at Candy Crate is for gift-giving, when flowers and falloons just won’t do; say, when the recipient is a male. Skip the power saws and socks, and gimme the 70’s Retro Box.

The site lists this as what I was supposed to get, even though there seem to have been some minor substitutions (I wouldn’t have eaten the Pixy Stix anyway).
Pixy Stix, Wonka Tart N Tiny, Sweetarts, Laffy Taffy, Bubble Gum Cigarettes, Candy Cigarettes, Apple Heads, Cherry Heads, Lemon Heads, Charms Sweet & Sour Pops, Double Bubble Gum, Sugar Daddy Pops, Atomic Fireballs, Boston Baked Beans, Licorice Pipe, Necco Assorted Wafers, Bubble Gum Cigars, Wonka Runts, Red Hots, Fun Gum Wax Lips, Pop Rocks, Zotz, ShockTarts, Reed’s Root Beer Candy Rolls, Classic Now & Laters & Jaw Breakers.
I mean, come on! Zots?!? Reeds hard candy?!? Gum cigarettes?! I’m a child again! It’s fun. Though I hungrily dug through the gift box looking for anything chocolate, especially the discontinued The Seven Up Bar (sigh). I imagine the lack of chocolate in the box is due to cost and storage issues, but after a few sugar rushes, I’ve forgiven and forgotten.
And in a personal dig, there’s a better known website that does this same business, Hometown Favorites, but a year ago they screwed up a business gift I sent to Canada, I ended up cancelling the order and was still stuck with a hefty shipping bill. So they’re not my friends anymore.

Hometown Favorites gets no love from Mr. Sugar Pop. How about that?!
Is your munchkin sneaking treats from the retro box or does it come with a padlock?

Zotz, yum! Fizzy sugary goodness, definitely a blast from my past, buying those long, sectioned packages at the liquor store.

It took me a long time to find places that carry Reeds. It’s tough to find places that do chocolate mail order without having to pay a premium (I just had some chocolate overnighted last week from a place in PA).
I was never keen on Seven Up Bars, but I do miss Zagnuts.
I’d like to find a place that sells Goldenberg’s Peanut Chews too.

It looks like you pay a premium, but you can order the Peanut Chews from here:

That Big Tips Candy Collection is awesome. I just got one as a gift because my old school, vintage candy obesssed Mother discovered it in Food and Wine (Nov. 2005) magazine and sent several to friends and me! It will be a great xmas present. Where did they find all these amazing retro candy bars?! http://www.bigtipscandy.com
