Oh, dip! Starbucks really wants to move their new line of ice creams…

The coffee giant announced today that it will give away more than one million complimentary cups of ice cream in the first-ever Starbucks Ice Cream Social tomorrow afternoon. The complimentary samples of Java Chip Ice Cream will be distributed to customers during a two-hour window, while supplies last, on Wednesday, June 29, in more than 6,000 Starbucks locations across the United States.

The ice cream is being sent to Starbucks stores via FedEx Express overnight delivery tonight and will arrive “in time for customers to celebrate summer and the early arrival of national ice cream month,” according to a company press release.

crazy frozen food logistics

Starbucks and Dreyer’s have teamed up with FedEx to orchestrate the overnight delivery of the complimentary Starbucks Ice Cream samples. Today, FedEx will send 20 refrigerated trucks to pick up approximately 10,000 boxes of the Starbucks Ice Cream cups from three frozen storage warehouses located in Los Angeles, Atlanta and Lancaster, PA and deliver them to centralized FedEx sort locations. From there, the Starbucks Ice Cream cups — wrapped in special packaging to ensure they will remain frozen — will travel via a fleet of more than 41 FedEx long-haul trucks and 77 FedEx planes and be delivered to Starbucks stores across the country by more than 4,000 FedEx couriers.

I called the store closest to my office and a manager said that every store in LA will get the shipment. No time has been announced yet. The store manager I spoke to said that the time is expected to be indicated in paperwork with the load arriving tonite. He also said that coupons would be given away as well to encourage customers to buy the ice cream in grocery stores this summer.

Good luck if you dare to brave the madness…

UPDATE: Timed to go down from 2:00-4:00PM this afternoon. That’s just when I should be eating sesame ice cream in Thai Town, at Silom Supermarket, 5321 Hollywood Blvd.
