LA Time Machines
Wednesday, July 6, 2005 9:30A website called LA Time Machines gives a glimpse at Los Angeles history via its restaurants. What makes a rastaurant a time machine? From the site:
Here are some tell tale signs of great time machines – at least the bars and restaurants: Semicircular leather booths (usually red), a well worn wooden bar, free appetizers already on the table before you sit down, waiters with uniforms, old analog cash registers and no TVs to be found (my biggest pet peeve), coin machines in the bathroom, lots of wood in the interior, a dark ambiance, indirect lighting, an old jukebox, tropical drinks, thick and heavy coffee cups, an original neon sign out front, fresh baked rolls or sourdough bread, and so on. You know the kind of place I’m talking about.
Complete with pictures and descriptions, the restaurant page will whisk you away to a bygone era.

That’s fun. More than local history, it’s a reminder of great places I’ve been to, and a bunch I’ve always meant to get to.
I was delighted to find San Gabriel’s Petrillo’s Pizza on the list. I’ve only been a few times, but if you like your crust bready and chewy–it’s the best. It reminds me of thick Chicago pizza, which ain’t easy to find ’round these hills.

I glad you guys like my site. These places are disappearing rapidly and we all really need to patronize these classic places or my site will eventually become all RIPs. Just recently the 2nd St. Redwood Saloon closed. You’d think with all the office crowd downtown, a historic place like that would be booming. As I go through my list of places to explore (which are listed on the site) I find at least half of the places have closed in the last five years. I’d urge everyone check out these sites. You don’t stay in business 50 to 70 years without having great food and ambiance!
