Going to Tia Juana

One doesn’t have to go south of the border to Tijuana to get Mexican food. Instead, I occasionally go to Tia Juana at Olympic and Granville (just east of Bundy).

Since I was going to A16 to get some camping stuff, I figured it was a good time to visit Tia Juana for some dinner first.

I realize, as an American of Chinese ancestry, I can’t claim expertise on Mexican cuisine and I know our LA.foodblogging community has their favorites. But taking a cue from non-artists who visit art museums, I say, I know what I like.

And I definitely like their made-on-the-spot corn tortillas.

I had their barbacoa plate. It includes what you see here, three corn tortillas and a salad. Tax and tip, $15.00.

The place is simple good eats with minimal fuss service wise and nothing fancy atmosphere. As I people watched, I could see a couple of tables where it was guys dinner out with hearty conversation, a couple of tables where it was two gal pals time to chat and one nicely dressed woman probably on a business trip.

I have had hit or miss luck with Tia Juana. Their food is decent, although sometimes their chicken can be a bit chewy. Also, if you get a margarita, stick with plain, the flavored ones aren’t very good.

I do agree on the tortillas though and the relaxed atmosphere is a great place to meet friends.
