Town & Country Bakery for Busy City Slickers

I made good on my promise to pick up a Town & Country roast chicken on my way home from work tonite. Okay, I lied. I called it in and made my sig-other pick it up since I was still in the office when Town & Country closes at 7PM.
When I got home, I quickly assembled our dinner plates. Town & Country’s cook had thoughtfully carved up the chicken for us so I didn’t have to exert my tired typing fingers. So much white meat for two Silver Lake crackers! The chicken was lightly oven-roasted with lemons, so it was the perfect flavor profile to serve cold, out on the deck, under the trees on a school night in July.
Town & Country’s owner also put together for us a cous-cous salad, grilled vegetables, carrot and garbanzo salad and some fresh greens with blue cheese and grapes. I pretty much love the cous-cous — the golden raisins were about to pop and the spices and chicken broth base are expertly balanced for a light savory salad. The grilled veg may have been sitting around in its vinegary juices for too long but not so much that I didn’t eat every bit.
If it’s late, and you’re hungry on your way home along Sunset Blvd., you can skip the ciabatta from the Jack In The Box drive-thru. Granted, you’ll pay twice the price, but you won’t feel skanky and despicable afterward — nor as JGold writes in this week’s column, will you feel like the Dumbest Man on TV. In fact, you may feel as healthy as if you had just taken a yoga class — without any of the exertion. How’s that for a SoCal fast food promise. ![]()
Pauline’s Edna Valley Wines report, particularly her muscat mention, reminded me that I had a cheap ($9.99), cold bottle of Mionetto Moscato in the fridge. I bought it a few weeks ago at Colorado Wine Company but hadn’t had the chance to pop off the metal cap (we used a rubber cork to preserve the sparkle). While the Moscato was a little sweet for dinner, it’s still very light, sparkling and summery — fancy, you might say.
Town and Country got a nice little write-up in Daily Candy LA yesterday. I’m looking forward to checking out the fall and winter menus later this year.
