If you live in the area bounded by Pico to the South, Sunset to the North, Beverly Glen to the East and the Ocean to the West, the closest sushi bar is none other than your kitchen table. Asakuma Sushi Delivery is the mobile arm of the Asakuma Restaurant on Wilshire, and when it comes to sushi they, well, deliver.

This past weekend I was home alone and worn out, but had a hankering for some raw fish. I have no problem dining solo, it was my laziness that kept me home. I called up Asakuma and rattled off my order, waited 45 minutes and opened my door to a package of fresh sushi.

Wipe that scowl from your face, getting sushi delivered isn’t sacrilege, it’s convenient. To keep the sushi fresh during delivery, Asakuma loads the bag with mini (reuseable) ice packs:

I opted for a mix of nigiri and sushi rolls, everything came wrapped up nicely and there was plenty of soy sauce, wasabi and ponzu for the albacore:

I got three orders of nigiri: tuna, albacore and hamachi (yellow tail):

Nigiri

All of the nigiri was fresh and great quality, the albacore was soft and mild, the tuna was red and delicious, but it was the yellow tail that stole the show. It had a perfect texture, with small lines of textured fat intertwined in the flesh.

Hamachi

The rolls, however, were a bit of a dissapointment. The spicy yellow tail and sipcy tuna were decent, but not too spicy and not overly flavorful.

The total damage for the dinner was around $33 including tax and tip, which is the same price you would pay at a standard sushi bar. For the lazy man, it works out great, although you do loose the joy of spontaneous inspiration at the sushi bar, and when I do eat sushi, I like to order in stages depending on how full I feel. With sushi delivery, it’s a one shot deal, you have to anticipate your hunger level and what will taste right that night.
