Asakuma Sushi Delivery

If you live in the area bounded by Pico to the South, Sunset to the North, Beverly Glen to the East and the Ocean to the West, the closest sushi bar is none other than your kitchen table. Asakuma Sushi Delivery is the mobile arm of the Asakuma Restaurant on Wilshire, and when it comes to sushi they, well, deliver.

This past weekend I was home alone and worn out, but had a hankering for some raw fish. I have no problem dining solo, it was my laziness that kept me home. I called up Asakuma and rattled off my order, waited 45 minutes and opened my door to a package of fresh sushi.

Wipe that scowl from your face, getting sushi delivered isn’t sacrilege, it’s convenient. To keep the sushi fresh during delivery, Asakuma loads the bag with mini (reuseable) ice packs:

I opted for a mix of nigiri and sushi rolls, everything came wrapped up nicely and there was plenty of soy sauce, wasabi and ponzu for the albacore:

I got three orders of nigiri: tuna, albacore and hamachi (yellow tail):

Nigiri

All of the nigiri was fresh and great quality, the albacore was soft and mild, the tuna was red and delicious, but it was the yellow tail that stole the show. It had a perfect texture, with small lines of textured fat intertwined in the flesh.

Hamachi

The rolls, however, were a bit of a dissapointment. The spicy yellow tail and sipcy tuna were decent, but not too spicy and not overly flavorful.

The total damage for the dinner was around $33 including tax and tip, which is the same price you would pay at a standard sushi bar. For the lazy man, it works out great, although you do loose the joy of spontaneous inspiration at the sushi bar, and when I do eat sushi, I like to order in stages depending on how full I feel. With sushi delivery, it’s a one shot deal, you have to anticipate your hunger level and what will taste right that night.

Hidei is probably the place they are talking about, it is the most popular and is pretty cheap. Kiriko is the best sushi I have had on Sawtelle though, it’s in the building on the corner of Olympic and Sawtelle, right next to Yakitoriya.

Hide Sushi is pretty good, but Sushi Sasabune on Sawtelle has got to be the best! It’s a little hole in the wall place off of Nebraska (it’s hard to see a restaurant sign), and there’s a set menu that the chef prepares. It’s best to sit at the sushi bar, but I would call ahead to make reservations. It’s about $50+ a person, but totally worth it! You’ll also notice the “No Spicy Tuna Rolls or California Rolls” signs on the wall which I thought was pretty hilarious!

I also used to like Otom on Sepulveda (just south of Venice but before Washington on the east side of the street). It’s an all you can eat sushi place for an hour, and the sushi chefs prepare the sushi right there at the bar for you. I haven’t been in a few years and not since I’ve been back home from the Midwest, but from what I remember, the fish was always fresh and the sushi chefs were always super friendly. I normally wouldn’t be caught in an “all you can eat” sushi place, but Otom was definitely an exception. Something to note is that you could only get one order of specialty (your more expensive) sushi like ikura (salmon roe) and amaebi (sweet shrimp), and it’s about $30-40/person for one hour. So it’s good to go early and on a not so busy dinner night. I’ll have to try it out soon to see if I’d still call it one of my favorites.
