The Newsroom Cafe, Santa Monica

Last night, after a flurry of wedding and car related errands, my finacee and I were famished and seeking something healthy-ish for dinner. To quench our quest, we popped into the Newsroom Cafe in Santa Monica on Wilshire. I had never been before, but had driven by plenty of times. From the outside, the cafe looks much bigger, but there are less than ten tables inside and about the same amount outside.

The menu is also rather limited, but had enough choices to feed our indecisiveness. The Menu is overtly healthy, with a choice of veggie burgers, soup, salads, sandwiches and quesadillas. I opted for the BBQ Veggie Burger, while my fiancee chose the Green Chile Pesto Quesadilla. Including a mineral water, the total bill came to just under $20, not too bad for a quick healthy dinner.

My baked veggie burger was hearty and flavorful, I particularly enjoyed the Rockenwagner 10-grain bun it was served on. The quesadilla was massive, made with a whole wheat tortilla and a nice side salad.

I have heard that the Newsroom is also known for their breakfast dishes, and from looking at the menu, I think I will drop in soon to test them out.

I haven’t eaten at that one, but I really like the one on Robertson, which is enormous, and has a much more extensive menu. Really, if you’re talking breakfasts, that’s the place for them, not the SM location. Although, I bet the SM location has the Robertson one beat on the crowd issue. The Robertson Newsroom is pretty crowded all the time, and the type of crowd I can’t stand - pretentious entertainment exec types. Must be the extensive selection of magazines that keeps drawing the type of people that seem to expect their own pictures to pop up in said magazines.

I’ve been to the one Robertson as well. Have tried omelets, salads and sandwiches. I like it but it is a little expensive for my budget to have lunch there routinely. And indeed, I found the crowd can be a little overwhelming.

sometimes I drive by the one on robertson on the way to work. for a while I was addicted to their oat bran muffins - if you get there in the 8:00 hour right after they open, these things are killer…just out of the oven and very hot, crispy outside, gobs of gooey steaming fruit inside. fat free. holy goodness, i’m working myself into a commuter breakfast frenzy just typing it. anyway - i recommend the muffins.

I will never eat there again after coming in and being ignored for a long time while I waited to even be acknowledged. 2 people were working and spoke in Spanish to each other the entire time ignoring me. I walked out and went to Starbuck’s where the service is consistant. There is something to be said about the Ma and Pop shops going under. Until they provide better service, I will continue to give my business to the bigger, better places.
