Bagel-On-A-String

Sitting outside Nate ‘n Al’s Deli on Sunday, we saw what will soon become the fashion trend for all of the kindergarten set. A dad and his two young boys were walking up Beverly Drive and my head turned. What was that hanging around the younger boy’s neck? Is it? Is that? Does he really have a bagel on a string, swiging from his neck? Yes, yes he did.

His older brother clearly had more of an appetite, as his string was empty and just dangling against his chest. The younger boy did have his hands free to dig in his animal cracker box, so I can see the utility. This sight obviously led to a discussion of other foods which could be tied around a child’s neck. Hamburgers? Corndogs? Chicken Nuggets? Clearly bagels are suited for this installation, although cream cheese may be forbidden.

If I ever have kids they’ll be outfitted with small flasks filled with bourbon. If I could I’d tie an automatically replensihing can of wet food around my cat’s neck too.

Hmm, I think maybe each morning the kids should string up a necklace of cheerios and mini-pretzels for the day.

Hell, decorate them like Christmas trees with popcorn and cranberries on a string.

And, there’s the old standby of macaroni on a string, though I’m not sure how it’d fare if you cooked it.
