China ColaI’m a big fan of local drink maker Reed’s Ginger Brew, so I wasn’t too cautious about trying their China Cola. They claim:

The herb formula that is in both Original China Cola and Cherry China cola was developed by an authentic herb master in China as a healthy way to cool off the Chinese youngsters and clean out their firey livers. the formula was taken to a U.S. beverage master who had worked on the original colas in the early 1900’s. He dusted off his old notebooks and the result was the best tasting and most natural cola in the world. Now sweetened with raw cane, it has been restored to its original delicious blend of imported Chinese herbs, essential oils, and natural spices.

I’m one of those people who justify drinking cane sugar drinks as being “healthier” than corn syrup drinks. Of course, it’s not healthy at all, but it may be a smidgen better for you than the artificial stuff. The China Cola does have a unique taste, in a blind taste test you might not even identify it as part of the cola family. It does have a nice, somewhat complex flavor though. It has hints of ginger, probably a little bit of clove and whatever flavor those essential oils impart. The drink isn’t overly carbonated and is quite refreshing on a warm day.

Reed’s is located in Los Angeles, and I always think about swinging by to see if they are trying to unload any excess inventory.
