Santa Monica Farmer’s Market 10/01/05

K. and I went to the Farmer’s Market today down on the Promenade. The produce is changing by leaps and bounds. Many kinds of squash are starting to show up, much to my delight. One stall has featured amazingly sweet carrots (red, yellow, and orange) the past few weeks. Many more people are starting to sell apples. I was sad to see that my favorite stand’s asparagus prices went up (it did have some amazing artichokes and cauliflower though).

This week’s haul included:

–Red Bell Peppers (I’ve found that the ones I pick up at the Farmer’s Market are so much juicier than the ones at the store.)
–Red, Orange, and Yellow Carrots
–Japanese Cucumbers (6 for $3!) (We made a side dish with these tonight, and they were crisp, flavorful, and had hardly any seeds.)
–Jona Gold Apples
–Cauliflower
–Heirloom Tomatoes (Yes, these are still available from one or two stands. The one we visited had 5 or 6 different varieties.)

At today’s SM market on Main St, we scooped up some pomegranates which are just starting to show up as well as some heirlooms and carrots. The peaches and nectarines are really fading out, bye bye stone fruits!
