Downtown

Tamale Festival

Los Angeles may be ground zero for three world record attempts this weekend: The largest tamale; the most people eating the largest tamale and the largest tamale steamer. Somebody call Mr. Guiness, because it’s going down at the First Annual LA Tamale Festival.

I’m usually good for no more than one tamale at a sitting but that may be a testament to my general tamale ignorance. Here’s hoping a tamale making class helps me mend my callow ways.

Fri., Nov. 11 3:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.
Sat., Nov. 12 12:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.
Sun., Nov. 13 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

  1. Yum, bring a cooler and cart home a batch of frozen tamales. They are great, straight from the freezer to the steamer for a no fuss meal.

  2. Oh Man! Tamale Festival?! I am SO there! I love ‘em and pack ‘em in the freezer for an instant delicious meal! I wonder if there’ll be plenty of parking in downtown this weekend.

  3. I *love* El Cholo’s green corn tamales. Nothing I have ever tried measures up.

BUT — I bake ‘em (from freezer) for one hour, turning at the half. Tried steaming them once and it was v messy and wet and I was unahppy with the resulting consistency.

Wish I’d read this post before the w/end… Never mind!

  4. The Tamale fest was great! There were 10(?) vendors, including: Molly’s Tamales, El Azteca, Tamale Man, El Pavo, Tamales Alberto, Tamales Y Esquites Carmelita, and Nini’s Tamale Factory. There was also a vendor serving pupusas and a funnel cake vendor (vital to any outdoor street fest). Molly’s was packed; long lines for their gourmet tamales. Great turnout; met a fellow food blogger from Chowhound.
