A Sushi Island in Gardena

Some time ago, the family and I had a girls’ day out and went down to the South Bay for lunch and to look for some Goodwill finds.
One of my mom’s new favorite hangouts nowadays is a local take-out joint just around the corner from her - Sushi Island. A family owned business, this small restaurant is simple in design with a few tables inside. Mostly take out orders, there’s a glossy colored to-go menu with pictures of each dish. For those (like us) who want to sit and dine in, the service is quick and super friendly. And you could always find plenty of Japanese reading material by the complimentary water stand while you wait for the food too.
It’s always interesting how easy it is that we can become creatures of habit. Take me for example. I park in the same spot every morning on the fifth floor of my parking structure. I get the same coffee mixture from the Flavia machine - either a Green Tea with Jasmine and a packet of Pure Cane sugar or a French Vanilla with a dairy creamer packet. And I like to order rolls with Shrimp Tempura in them when it’s on the menu. The one at Sushi Island had a nice spicy kick and an artistic flair to it with splashes of bright colors on the white canvas of a plate.
My mom proved to be yet another creature of habit. She ordered her usual favorite on the menu, the Tofu Salad. She raved about its freshness and great flavor so I also placed an order for one. And boy, was she right! It was absolutely deliciously fresh and healthy. No leaf in my bowl, no shred of gobo, no lonely bean sprout were left behind.
Sushi Island was definitely worth the stop. Quick, delicious, friendly, and reasonably priced food…what a great combination to go or to eat in!
