Röckenwagner to Close
Wednesday, December 7, 2005 12:56After 21 years, Röckenwagner is closing its doors in Santa Monica. I have written about Röckenwagner here and have eaten there a number of times, both for dinner and their hard-to-beat happy hour.
The last day for them is Saturday, January 14, 2006, I would highly suggest trying to at least make it over for a happy hour before they move on to other endeavors.
There are a few ventures that will be continuing the Röckenwagner lineage. Currently, construction is going on at Abbot Kinney and San Juan, where the 3 Square Bakery & Café will open. They will be serving Röckenwagner pastries, breads and pretzel products, and there will be an indoor-outdoor café serving contemporary diner fare. Should be open early 2006.
They are also working on a catering kitchen and bakery which will continue to pump out the famous Röckenwagner goodies for us to enjoy.
Best of luck to Hans and his family!

Ate there for a holiday special two years ago and was thoroughly pleased with the service and food, it is a shame, since there are only a couple of what I would consider premium restaurants on that stretch of Main, and I’ve found Chinois a bit disappointing for the money (more on that later). Funny enough, my wife complained about her food that night, having ordered a filet mignon WELL DONE. I told her to shut up, it was her own doing.

Oh, I’m so sad. I’ve really enjoyed the food I’ve had there. I’ll definitely visit before it closes.

I’m not so sad. I ate there recently, and even though the place nearly empty, the service was terrible. I must admit the food was good, but it did not make up for what was lacking in service. I would not bother to go there for a farewell dinner since it seemed like the heart of the place was gone months ago.

This is the worst news in 2006,- so far. Bollocks to service, have you tasted their Gulyas?
I will go there and tie myself to a Stammtisch. Truly sad. LA with the A missing,- L is were I live now.

Perhaps we should have an la.foodblogging happy hour take over before they close the doors. The pretzel burger and ahi sammich should not be missed.
