Get your pho thai fix this week because Golden Deli will be closed from Jan. 10 to Feb. 10.

Also, in August, GD shuts down for a month of vacationing.

That’s exactly why I was surprised about February. Isn’t one month enough? Their fans need them.

Vietnam House, located in the minimall right across the street, is owned and run by the same people as Golden Deli, has the exact same pho, spring rolls, etc., as well as 7 beef dinners and an unusual duck soup, and stays open when its sister restaurant is closed. All is not lost.

1. GD is additionally closed Jan-Feb so that the good folks who run it can enjoy Tet (Lunar New Year) in the homeland.
2. Vietnam House is owned by relatives of the people who run GD, but not the same people (there was a rift in the family). Thus, the food is similar, but the operations are different.

For some reason, i taste a slight difference in the pho from GD and VH. I haven’t gone to GD in such a long time b/c of the wait, and started frequenting a place called Pho Pasteur (as mentioned in my pho posting listed above).

We asked one of the GD owners how he planned to spend his vacation and he said he didn’t have enough money to leave the country but he might take a roadtrip to SF.

Is this the first time they’ve taken off for Tet? I don’t remember it happening last year. They have been doing some renovations lately — maybe they’re taking the month to finish them up?

Golden Deli just started closing last year for TET, from Jan-Feb. This is their new vacation month. They will remain open for the month of August from now on. If anyone is intereted, Golden Deli has another restaurant on Valley and Del Mar called Saigon Flavor. Food is just as good.

Please disregard this blog. It is outdated. Golden deli has only one more restaurant under it’s name, which is Saigon flavor. We will not be closing any more full months as of now. Any vacation dates will be posted on the web site.
