Past Season Figs
Friday, January 6, 2006 13:23I have a question for our readers who might be able help me. How long do I wait for past season figs to ripen?
I have a fig tree that still has fruit on the branches. They’re smaller figs than the respectable ones that were harvested late this summer, and they’re not brown.

I know that avocados keep best (and don’t ripen fully) while on the tree. But what to do with these figgy delights? The birds haven’t touched them and since the leaves fell from the tree last week, it’s pretty obvious that they’re turning up their beaks. Does that mean that they’ll never ripen, just shrivel up and fall off?

If they haven’t ripened by November or so you should just take them off when you prune your tree this month. It’s way too cold to properly ripen now. At best those shriveled figs will be underripe; at worst, fermenting with mold and mildew. *Yuck*
