California Roll and Sushi Fish

With a name like California Roll and Sushi Fish, you might think that this sushi bar would not serve up real quality fish or anything beyond sushi-for-beginners. You would be wrong. While it is true that California Roll and Sushi Fish does serve a number of decorative and non-traditional dishes, their fish is fresh and tasty, the sushi chefs are incredibly friendly and I have never had a bad meal there.

When my now wife and I first started dating, CR&SF was one of the first sushi places we went together. Since then we have been hooked and have turned a number of our friends on to both the Wilshire and Redondo Beach locations (there are more, including Westwood and Downtown, I believe).

Among the nice touches at California Roll and Sushi Fish are the complementary miso soup, the gorgeous ceramic dishes and the fish! Always fresh and expertly sliced, I like to try the different appetizers such as the tuna tataki and the garlic albacore sashimi.

As I mentioned, they do offer a number of what I would call “non-traditional” dishes, so if you are a narrow minded sushi purist, this may not be the spot for you. If, however, you like delicious raw fish prepared in a number of appetizing arrangements, give this place a try.

911 Roll

The other night we had some nigiri (tuna, yellow tail, albacore) and also enjoyed the 911 Roll which is an inside out spicy tuna roll, topped with perfectly ripe slices of avocado and touched with drops of a spicy sauce. Beside the beautiful presentation, it tastes great!

Shrimp Soy Paper Roll

Another semi-regular order is the Shrimp Soy Paper Roll. This roll has shrimp, pickled carrots, green beans and avocado wrapped up in rice and soy paper rather than nori. The ponzu sauce with scallions is a nice compliment.

Orange Panda

All of the chefs at California Roll and Sushi Fish have artistic knife skills. If you don’t get a carved radish, cucumber or other vegetable, you will still get to see their playfulness at the end of the meal, the other night we got an Orange Panda served for dessert.

While some may choose to stick with Sushi Sasabune across the street, for an everyday sushi treat, give California Roll and Sushi Fish a try.

I think the California Rolls might be a franchise. Some have full blown sushi bars like the location on Wilshire, others don’t have the actual bar with a sushi master, but you can still order a la carte. The quality does vary from location to location, but Wilshire is prime!

You’re right, I forgot that the Redondo Beach one is without a bar. It’s actually a pretty small place, but I think that they serve the same menu. For all of my googling might, I couldn’t find a company website where I could pull all of the locations from.
