February 28, National Pancake Day
Monday, February 27, 2006 19:32I heard a radio ad today for IHOP’s National Pancake Day.
In the commercial, they said IHOP will be offering free pancakes to recognize the special day. The spot also mentioned that IHOP would be taking donations for First Book a non-profit that helps provide books for children of low-income families.
I decided to do a Google search to see if this was just a marketing gimmick unique to IHOP.
Apparently, the Austrialians are recognizing it too and are also using it as an opportunity to do fundraising for local non-profits.
Aunt Jemima has a press release for National Pancake Week!
I would never have guessed that so many people would flip over flapjacks!
So bad wordplay aside, the question I have to ask LAFBers is this: where do you go for mom and pop pancakes if you opt out of the big chain IHOP option?

So I’ve only been to one pancake house in the last year, and that’s in Manhattan Beach - Uncle Bill’s Pancake House. I wonder if they’re doing anything to recognize this international celebration? Sounds like a lot of fun! I like mine with extra fruit and whipped cream, please. :)

John O’Groats serves some mean pumpkin pancakes.

I’ve lived in six different neighborhoods in LA, but never lived near a good pancake. It’s probably what I’d specialize in if I had a restaurant, because it’s what I’m always missing. I’m talking about the traditional panckake: tender and light-textured like the platter-sized ones at The Pantry downtown. Mmm-doggy. In La Canada, there is a wonderful restaurant called Dish that is well-loved for it’s breakfast menu, which regularly features three more upscale pancakes: buttermilk pancakes, apple oatcakes, and cornmeal jonnycakes, all of which are outstanding. http://dishbreakfastlunchanddinner.com/

Those free pancakes were deliciious…The fact that they were free made them even more delicious!

I loved the pancakes at both John O’ Groats and the Lazy Daisy (mmm… banana!). Swinger’s (Santa Monica) are pretty good as well!

From time to time I like to make crepes at home, hence I rarely eat pancakes when I go out for brunch.
But the only place in LA that’s worth a damn (I reckon!) is Dupars in Studio City. They do these really light and fluffy buttermilk pancakes.
Still, those pumpkin ones at John O’Groats sound pretty spesh. Mebbe I should branch out… take a walk on the wild side…
Oh, I think Hugos do some cool ones, too.
