Pub trivia Sunday night at Finn McCool’s
Wednesday, March 15, 2006 21:50Given the legend of Finn McCool and the Salmon of Knowledge, it’s only appropriate that one can now play pub trivia every Sunday night at 8 PM at Finn McCool’s on Main Street in Santa Monica.
Finn’s main claim to fame is that it was painstakingly taken apart in Dublin and reassembled in Santa Monica after a trip through the Panama Canal, so it’s as authentic an Irish pub as you’ll find anywhere. They make a big deal about pouring you a proper Imperial pint of beer and serve the usual pub fare like bangers and mash, fish and chips and shepherd’s pie, all of which are pretty tasty. You can get salmon too, although it is unclear if eating it will give you any special powers.
The most interesting thing on the menu is boxty, a kind of Irish potato pancake. You have your choice of several fillings like seafood in lemon butter sauce, corned beef and cabbage, and shepherd’s pie. My favorite is chicken and basil with peppers, mushrooms and cheese in a nice tomato cream sauce.
Ordinary weeknights are not usually crowded and Finn’s is a good place for a casual meal or drink with friends. If you like pub trivia, arrive early to get a table, as it will likely be very crowded, and expect to be asked plenty of questions on celebrities and their weddings. There are cash prizes for the winners, and if you can rustle up a crowd to show enough raucous team pride, you may win a free round of drinks! Finn’s also has live Irish music on Sunday afternoons from 4-7 PM.

Finn’s is a fun place for happy hour too. I like their big onion rings. I tried the boxty and it was ok, but a bit bland for me. I do love the champ though, and not just because I like saying it.
