Dining Plans For This Weekend? A Slight Change.
Friday, April 28, 2006 14:32For the past few weeks we have been asking diners to tip us off as to where they are planning to eat for the weekend. From a reader’s perspective, it is very popular. Every week people read these posts more than almost any other. Lately, the comments have been a bit light though, leaving the readers with limited suggestions.
Instead of sharing where you are going to eat this weekend, how about letting us know where you would suggest eating this weekend. If a coworker asked you where they should have dinner Saturday, what would you say? If your sister wanted to have brunch, where would you send her?
I kicked the weekend epicurian quest off early with a fantastic lunch at Lilly’s in Venice. Their $10 lunch special is hard to beat (full review coming).
Where are you eating, where should everyone else go?

Just had a fantastic dinner at La Guelaguetza. The service was very friendly and it had excellent mole. How do I know this? I was just down in Oaxaca in December. And the best part is the pricing, impossible to beat.

I have been meaning to check that place out. Last night we made a dinner out of the Border Grill happy hour (carnitas, panuchos and plantain empanadas, oh my!).
We might try out India Sweets and Spices today and we will be at the Santa Monica Farmer’s Market on Sunday for brunch.

Well, brunch on Sundays is always fun. There have been a lot of brunch posts here lately and they all sound like great places.
My fave places for brunch on Sundays are Campanile on La Brea and Dusty’s in Silverlake.
But Le Pain Quotidien (near me in Studio City) is a must-try one of these days, with its friendly, inviting banquet table seating inside and smaller tables on the street. So far I’ve only sampled their excellent organic croissants and brioches to go. Their fruit pies look wonderful and they have all sorts of tartines (small sandwiches) and organic yoghurt and granola on offer. Soups and salads and mezze plates, too.

If anyone is still looking for Sunday brunch recommendations, you can’t beat Madame Matisse in Silverlake, corner of Sunset and Maltman. They have great coffee and I really like their take on huevos rancheros. You gotta go early though to beat the late-sleeping hipsters–it’s a small place.

My friends and I went to the Inn of the seventh ray last weekend and I can not say that I would go again. It is a place with a very nice setting, and idealy, it would be a great place to have sunday brunch. But we found that our service was not great, especailly after the waitress knew that we were not going to have the brunch buffet. I ordered the crab quiche which was ok. It was surely something that was possilbly made the day before and was just reheated. But along with the quiche there was a very small small scattering of curry potatos that were very good, but i felt like I was eatting the leftovers to someone’s potato’s from last night. The cappucino was very good, but also very small. For such small portions, we all felt like we were being punished for not getting the $30.00 buffet. So the point of my comment is to get the buffet if you plan to go to the Inn of the Seventh Ray. This way you will be able to serve yourself, and the wait staff will not turn their nose at you.

After reading about the new and ONLY sushi restaurant in Eagle Rock I knew I wanted to try it. That was about two months or so ago. This latest gems is called Mia Sushi and it’s on Eagle Rock Blvd. Now that we’re thinking about relocating from Silver Lake to Eagle Rock, we ended up having dinner at Mia with friends who live in the neighborhood. We had a nice dinner, ate from a fun menu, and met the owner who is an energetic, charming, real estate agent who was full of positive energy and had a great sense of humor. The sushi is good, nothing extraordinary, but if the sake (salmon) and hamachi (yellowtail) taste fresh to me, then the establishment is a winner in my book! The salmon and yellowtail were very very fresh. Mia is charming and literally stands out as it’s situated on a stretch of Eagle Rock Blvd that is dotted with cafes but mostly surrounded by small offices, auto body shops, apartments and single family homes. Check it out! *Reservations highly recommended. Our wait time was 20-40 minutes, and I think we were seated in about 30 mintues.

Thanks for the tip on the new place U-E! Everyone needs to find a solid, not outrageous sushi place.

Where can i go to find the best Seafood in the LA area? I’ve been to the Reel Inn but I need some more reccomendations! P.S. Guelaguetza is stellar! Monte Alban is just as good if not better…

Jason-
Ocean Ave Seafood in Santa Monica and Water Grill Downtown (both part of King’s Seafood Company) are good bets. Neither are as reasonable as Reel Inn though.

Oh yeah, Reel is is awesome for down and dirty, no frills seafood. Enterprise Fish Company in Santa Monica (off of Main St.) is a good, competant place of which I will be posting a review soon. Good alternative to the pricier seafood places

I have been to Ari-ya a few times and each time
the food was fresh and inventive. The sushi chef
is well known. I always have the black honey cod
and the lobster tempura roll. We also love the
warm eel roll. Everyone I have taken loves it
for service, W. Hollywood location, and ambiance. Most patrons love his sushi and sit
at the counter.
as well as the fresh food.
