Friday, May 5, 2006 7:16Happy Cinco de Mayo, which is not Mexican Independence Day. Rather, it is a commemeration of the “Batalla de Puebla” (Battle of Puebla). More information from olvera-street.com:
Cinco de Mayo” (the fifth of May) is a day of remembrance of the “Batalla de Puebla” (Battle of Puebla): in which poorly equipped but highly motivated Méxican forces of less than four thousand troops, defeated the French forces of five thousand who were well equipped and disciplined. The city of Puebla, 100 miles east of México City, was the battleground on which México was to prove to the world that national sovereignty would not be compromised. On the morning of May 5, 1862, history was written that continues to serve as a reminder that with patriotism, valor and pride, one will overcome any and all obstacles.
In Los Angeles, we mark Cinco de Mayo in a variety of ways, most of which involve eating and drinking. Therefore, it’s appropriate to ask, where are you celebrating? Are you avoiding trendy spots or are you going to give in and meet your frat brothers at Cabo Cantina? Have a hidden spot with the best homemade tamales? Let us know in the comments.

I had my margaritas on Wednesday at Amigos in Pasadena. I predict Amigos will be more filled than usual, but not completely overpacked, with Caltech grad students taking a break from science. The trendies don’t usually hang out there, so it might be a pretty good low-key option if you are in that area.
