Santa Monica Farmers Market Report For 5/24/06

I just got in from the farmers market and it was great! I am starting to see the beginning of summer fruits. There were 2 stands I saw that had cherries, and the woman said they hope to have cherries through Fathers Day, but the rain on Monday may have hurt their crops. Too bad, I hope the cherry season isn’t cut short! Lots of avocados, some peaches and nectarines starting to show up, apricots (although they aren’t as sweet as peak season), sugar snap peas, English peas, green beans, a few stands of tomatoes, carrots, lots of strawberries! Less winter veggies were out- barely any cauliflower, little broccoli. I picked up a basket of cherries, a 3 pack of strawberries (to make pie this weekend), peaches, a few apricots just to taste, peas…i think that was it for this week.

Talking about fresh fruits this past weekend I had a chance to try two fruit bouquets from Edible Arrangements and Fruits To Remember (see http://www.ediblearrangements.com and http://www.fruitstoremember.com). For some reason these are all the vogue these days in corporate functions and weddings in LA. I had seen the Edible Arrangements vans before, but never heard of FruitsToRemember (which I find out now have a small store in Beverly Hills). Anyway, if you’re into this sort of thing, spend your money (yes, spend, not save), and get the one by Fruits To Remember - amazingly fresh, much more so than the Edible Guys, very very tasty, and look much better than the competition too. I bet they get their fruits from local farmer markets. They are more expensive than Edible Arrangements, but hey, in this case, you get what you pay for. Enjoy.

^ Is it just me, or does this sound like a shill? Anyone who (even gently) disses the opposition makes me a little wary of their motives for posting.

Still, some useful info, there. I think I’ll check it out. At least this poster was upfront about it being spendy (which they are!)

If you go to restaurant A and restaurant B and find that B’s hamburgers were better than A’s by a good margin, you wouldn’t say so to your friends? I am not connected with either Edible Arrangements or Fruits To Remember and mind you, neither produces “bad” stuff. They are both actually quite good; its just that IMHO the Fruits to Remember one are “better” and more luxurious and yes, more expensive; that’s all. My 2 cents.

Okay! Thanks again for the info, because I had never even heard of these things (as I never really come in contact with the corporate, functions or even the prom world…)
They do look quite spectacular and delicious.
