Seeking Specialty Sausages for the Summer?

Wednesday, May 31, 2006 19:15

With summertime weather taking us outside, it is time for firing up the grill outside!

Jonah got us going on this track with his positive report on TJ’s Carne Asada.

I’m definitely going to give that a try sometime this summer!

However, what if you and your guests are yearning for sausages? Where do you go when you are on the lookout for links for your cookout?

I suppose it is easy enough to go to the market and buy some nationally mass produced sausages. It is probably cheaper and most us would be quite content with them and our guests would be none the wiser.

However, what if you feel like going to a specialty store?

There are two places I go: Huntington Meats at the Farmer’s Market on Fairfax and Jeff’s Gourmet Kosher Sausage Factory.

On a previous cookout, I went to Huntington Meats and got a mix: Portuguese Linguica, English bangers and Chicken Apple. They have many many more types available.

I’m attending a cookout this Friday and I was assigned sausage buying duties. On this occasion, I decided to swing by Jeff’s.

In addition to selling the sausages in packages, their location does a brisk take out cooked food business as well as sit down dining. As I waited in line to order up sausages, I noticed there was not an empty table inside nor outside.

At the counter, I opted for a mixture of sausages. Of course, I got some Kosher hot dogs (6 links - $5.99/lb). I ordered some of the spicy Mergez (7 links - $8.50/lb). The guy at the counter suggested I round out the mix by getting the flavorful Polish (4 links - $8.50/lb) and the mild Smoked Chicken Apple (4 links - $8.50/lb). Each package was about 3/4 a pound.

Thanks for tip on the local butchers. I have read in many a egullet forum that http://www.usinger.com/ has really good sausages. I have not tried them yet, but I plan on placing an order soon. Has anyone tried Usingers?

A native Milwaukeean, I grew up on Usingers, and consider it the gold standard of all things sausage.

Now a resident of Upper Glendale, have in my freezer frozen brats from one of the two or three actual German deli/butchers in So Cal, Schreiner’s Fine Sausages. It’s first and foremost a great butcher shop, with a wide array of European style sausages, cheeses and German imports. There are a few tables to sit and have a sandwich, not to mention the grat European bakery next door, Berolina.
