Forget 31 Flavors, Choose From 56

One of my friends introduced me to Fosselman’s Ice Cream Company. He was surprised I had never heard of it before. MSN put Fosselman’s on its top 10 ice cream places in the U.S. in 2003 and 2004, L.A. Magazine awarded them with the Best Malt award in 2004, and CitySearch calls them the best ice cream in Los Angeles. KCAL-9 even did a story on them. When we got there, I then knew why I had never heard of it. Fosselman’s, located in Alhambra, is oddly placed around car dealerships. I never would have thought about stopping by there (unless I’m shopping for a car.) Still, it’s easy to spot because even at 8:45pm on a Sunday night, there is a long line of people waiting to get their ice cream, and a long line of people outside enjoying their desserts.
Fosselman’s has been part of Southern California since 1924. Founded in 1919 in Iowa, founder Christian Anthony Fosselman decided to relocate to Pasadena to take advantage of the new refrigeration system. Ever since the move to Pasadena, Fosselman’s has been serving homemade ice cream to Californians. How has Fosselman’s lasted after all this time? For one, it is still the family business. From what I understand, Fosselman’s is currently being operated by the third generation of the family. I guess it’s a family secret on how to keep this place running so successfully.
As if the 56 available flavors aren’t enough reasons to give this place a try, look at the prices. Not an incredibly cheap, but Fosselman’s is still less expensive than mega-powers like Coldstone’s.
Single Scoop $2.15
Double Scoop $3.35
Triple Scoop $4.20
Banana Split $5.50
Root Beer Float $3.45
Ice Cream Soda $3.85
Shakes & Malts $4.30
Smoothie $4.10
Sundaes (1, 2 or 3 scoops) $3.85, $4.50, $5.15
Ice cream flavors I tried tonight were toasted almond, chocolate chip, and white chocolate chip macadamia nut. I will definitely be going back to try some of the other flavors such as taro, lychee, and burgundy cherry. For people who like ice cream and want a reduced fat dessert, Fosselman’s also makes frozen yogurt, sherbets, and sorbet.

I have fond memories of this place. My cousin who I used to visit in Rowland Hts, took me to this ice cream institution on a hot summer day. Great icecream in an unexpected location.

I’m a native of Alhambra…been going there since 8th grade…so that’s a loong time for me. Nothing has changed over the years, which I like. Try the pistachio, it’s da best!

They also has ice cream flavors that reflect the diverse tastes from around the San Gabriel Valley. Such flavors are like those found in the far East such as red bean, green tea, taro and the latino culture with dulce de leche and rum raisin. The seasonal ones such as peach and cherry are a must try as well.
