Before it was Catch 22 with its creative vibe and walls made up of collaged pieces of wood mixed with modern illustrations from local artists, it was the small boba space of Cafe Paradiso and even before that, it was Relaxstation during my college heyday and a frequent stop for Bruins and Trojans alike.

MS and I were one of the first to greet the new, young, hip owner last year who gave us some delicious packets of instant milk tea and two huge stainless steel pots as he was cleaning out the kitchen behind the cash register. We’ve always been fans of this little boba shop, have played a game of Scrabble in Español there, and like to get our shaved ice treats here.

This milky cup of sweetness is heavenly on a hot summer day with thinly shaved ice, a dollup of both regular and condensed milk to give it its creaminess, and your choice of a number of toppings. I like the Mango Jelly that’s shaped into soft tiny stars. When you mix it together, it’s absolutely delicious. You’ll be thirsting for more once you’re at the bottom.

Shaved ice is one of my childhood favorites! If you’re ever in Monterey Park, there’s a good place on Valley x Atlantic Blvd just east of the Mandarin theater. I can’t remember the name of the cafe, but it’s been there for a good fifteen years at least.

Thanks Urban Epicurean! Hmm…sounds familiar as if I was introduced to Boba there. Was it called Shau May’s by any chance? If so, I was also introduced to shaved ice with condensed milk there too! =)

Hi Kristy! Thanks for the scoop–this is one of the few places on Sawtelle I haven’t tried yet. Now I’m excited to go!

This is the greatest tasting shaved ice i’ve tasted yet. I was introduced by some close co-workers. Van Q. & Hazel L. Thanks ladies. Now I’m hooked. Especially when it’s hot.
Now everytime i walk into catch 22, they know who I am and what kind of shaved ice toppings i want. that’s great! I love the art in the inside pieces of wood on the walls. nice…
I just wish it was closer to home. but i’ll drive all the way from Harbor City just for some of this shaved ice with Lychee fruit or jelly, red beans, boba, and some sweet condenced milk. ahhhh yes. nice and cold.
I recomend it to everyone who likes to relax and have something fresh to drink. JoserMoistOner
