Di Dio’s Italian Ice

Last week, Kristy wrote about Japanese shaved ice. I do like shaved ice (or “shave” ice in Hawaii), but one of my favorite summer treats is to head over to Di Dio’s Italian Ices on Montana.

Di Dio’s serves authentic Italian Ices, which are made from fresh fruit and fruit juice, plenty of sugar and some water.

You can get multiple flavors in one order. I usually get the medium size ($3.50) and stack it with three flavors. Rather than eating the top flavor and moving on to the next, I bore a hole down the side and pick away at the different choices.

Di Dio’s hypes their Blood Orange flavor when it is available, but honestly, it seems like it is always available. It could be that I mostly go there in the summer though.

Italian Ice is the ultimate headache inducer, so be careful and resist the urge to power down your whole order in under a minute.

I tend to stick with the citrus flavors, like grapefruit, lime, lemon and the aforementioned blood orange. The watermelon nice as well.

Mmmm … I went here on one of my few ventures over to the West side and it was completely worth it. Really hits the spot on a hot day, and the old fashioned candies they have are fun as well.

YUM! Will definitely check this one out. MS and I are due to stroll the SM Pier to see if our Picasso painting is up. =) When we finally get around to it, we’ll be sure to stop in for some deliciously cool and refreshing Italian ice! Thanks for the heads up!

Oohh…thanks for the tip. I am iced dessert obssessed in the summer, and try to keep a mental list of places to stop around the city. Will add this one.

I wish this place had good gelato b/c I live near it
but I found it all syrupy and lacking anything close to
a natural taste. Found it horrid.

Haven’t tried this one yet, but I will when I am in Santa Monica next. I do recommend a small place in San Diego called Claudio’s Italian Ice. Definitely real fruit, no syrup…
