Yes, boba is nothing new. In fact, you may say that the boba fad has come and gone. The fact remains, though, that boba is a fun, tasty drink and everyone has their favorite mix of tea, tapioca balls, milk and flavoring.

For those of you not familiar with Boba, or Bubble Tea, it is essentially a tea drink with small balls of tapioca mixed in. You drink it with a large straw so that you can suck up the balls while you enjoy the drink.

I imagine that the invention of boba tea went something like this:

You know, this tea is good, but I’m just not doing enough chewing…

I have sampled a number different boba places around town and have decided that Lollicup is my dealer of choice. Their flavorings are not as sickly sweet as some other places and they also have a little side menu of tasty snacks.

Milk Tea

The most popular order is boba milk tea, which comes with non-dairy creamer as the default. This is a good combo, but packs a whopping 440 calories for a 16 ounce drink. You can substitute low fat milk or soy milk if you are concerned with such things.

Green Tea

Personally, I like to get jasmine green tea, with lychee flavor and boba. I skip the milk altogether.

Spicy Nuggets

As I mentioned, Lollicup also serves little snacks. The other day we tried the potstickers and some spicy chicken nuggets. I can’t speak for the quality of the ingredients (frozen vs. fresh?), but everything was really good and cooked to order. You can request how spicy you want the nuggets, I went for max spice and it cleared the sinuses, quite spicy.

Good summer treat, have a go. If you don’t like the boba, you can always challenge your friends to see who can shoot them the furthest out of your straw.
