Eat At Mo’s
Saturday, August 19, 2006 19:22Aside from the occasional In-N-Out visits, I’m not usually a fan of burger joints. Friends insisted I give Mo’s a chance though. They kept telling me how not only does Mo’s make great, juicy burgers, but they also have this great burger bar. I had no clue what they were talking about, so just to understand what’s so special about this burger bar, I had to give this place a try for myself.
If first impressions mean anything, then this place felt comfy. First, we easily had parking thanks to the valet parking. Next, as soon as we walked in, the rustic wood setting just created a pleasant ambience. We were immediately seated and started reviewing the menu. I actually heard mixed reviews for Mo’s. Although I really wanted to give their burgers a chance, I decided to play it safe and ordered the pesto chicken sandwich ($9.95), which also guranteed me a trip to the burger bar.
The chicken sandwich was really huge. In addition to a generous amount of pesto spread on the grilled chiken breast, the sandwich also included a lot of avocado, cucumbers, grilled onion, lettuce, tomato, and chipotle mayonnaise. So with this much stuff, I really did not make the best use of the burger bar. The burger bar basically has condiments to top your burgers, but in addition to that, there are some side dishes, too. I added some potato salad and black beans to mine. To be honest, I really didn’t need anything from the burger bar. The sides weren’t that great, and my pesto chicken sandwich was fine as it was and tasted much better than I expected, and a lot more filling, too. I was only able to finish half of my sandwich. I had to take the other half home. I could have done without the burger bar experience completely, but at least now I know.
One of my friends had a burger covered completely in swiss cheese. Aside from the cheese, his burger was pretty plain, so he definitely made good used of the burger bar. He devoured the whole thing pretty fast. I took that as an indication that he enjoyed his cheeseburger ($9.95). Another friend ordered the citrus chicken salad($10.95) , which looked very appetizing. In the end, I thought all the raves about the burger bar were overrated, but the food, while not extraordinary, is worth a visit.

Hmmmm, no one got the foggy bottom burger? My favorite! Peanut butter and jelly!

I could not disagree more. Having spent eight years working a few blocks from Mo’s, I’ve been dragged to many a lunch and dinner there, and I find them to be about the worst burgers in town. In fact, I would much rather go to Pappoo’s across the street and have a hot dog than eat at Mo’s. There is also a bistro right next door (on Riverside) that has amazing cuisine. Mo’s, is not even average.

Patt - Is it just the burgers you don’t like? As I mentioned in the review, I had the chicken sandwich (which was pretty good), and my friend really enjoyed his salad. Please let me know! Thanks.
