LA Times Best Deals, What Are Yours?

The LA Times published their list of 25 great deals from around town.

Some are good tips, some a little questionable ($17 for dim sum a ‘deal’?)

What are your tips? Where do you get your deals? I’m behind them with the Bharat Bazaar call and I would like to check out the Opus fixed menu. I would also have added some of the happy hour deals like the Border Grill $3 menu or the $3 chicken pot pie at Daily Grill.

Leave your tips in the comments.

How could they mention tacos without talking about the best tacos in LA from the taco truck parked at the Nishikawa auto repair lot on Fair Oaks in Pasadena. Most of us refer to it simply as “taco truck” because when it comes to taco trucks, there is only one worth considering, but some people call it “El Taquito Mexicano.

Empanadas at the Continental Gourmet market, 12921 Prairie, in Hawthorne. $1 each.

I’ve been meaning to write a whole post on these — they’re awesome!

On the taco tip, I really like the fish, shrimp or scallop tacos at Senor Fish in Eagle Rock (also in South Pas, I think). Not quite as cheap as Baja Ensenada that the article mentions, but still only about $2-3 bucks.

Also, they mentioned Norman’s cocktails, but not the Friday night pig roast–for $19 you get pig, paella and mashed sweet potatos. Probably the best pork I’ve eaten. ever.

Any Tacos Mexico location. Although Tito’s is probably the most well known taco stand around, I can’t say they blow me away.

    1. El Taquito Mexicano on Fair Oaks for asada and pastor tacos.
    2. Sapp Coffee Shop in Thai Town for Thai Boat Noodles.
    3. Yai in Thai Town for Duck Mi Noodles.
    4. Los 5 Puntos for stellar tacos made from handmade tortillas.

We went to Opus (Wilshire & Western) yesterday for dinner - what a fantastic restaurant! They no longer have the $30 tasting menu - it’s now a deal where you do $10/dish (can be a bit more depending on the dish). We started with a strawberry gazpacho, had some seared ahi, a wonderful soft boiled egg, soup with pork belly, veal cheeks on torn pasta, and finished off with a tasty brownie. It was a spur of the moment thing so I didn’t even bring a camera phone. :( We were shocked that the restaurant was NOT full on a Friday night - definitely a gem!
