S & W Country Diner… Good eats in Culver City

I am all for this place. I love an affordable, tasty breakfast to jump start my day. I trickled into Culver City, not thinking that I would have any mind blowing experience, but I did…. Well, not MIND-blowing, but my expectations were met with a large plate of eggs and I was happy. Breakfast, as you know, is my favorite meal of the day. I get to eat to my hearts content because I have the whole day ahead of me to work it off. The carb-loaded, fat-driven, flavorful mouthfuls are what makes my heart pitter-patter (or maybe I’m mistaking it for the sounds of my arteries clogging? haha). What other time can you eat syrup, sausages, waffles, biscuits, and gravy all in one grand amalgamation on your plate and be totally accepted by the public? When does pork fat sound “okay” to indulge in besides breakfast? So with a suggestion from a certain site, I decided to drag my bestest friend to grab some early morning eats.

We headed to S & W for breakfast in the blossoming Culver City to fill our grumbling bellies on a weekday morning. I was informed that there usually is a freakishly long wait on weekends and I HATE waiting when I’m hungry. We arrived around 10 am and were seated immediately. The interior was cool with tons of knick knacks hanging on the wall. I was also very surprised to see that they had an “happy hour” for breakfast (which I used to my full advantage!). Now my you, I didn’t have the most mind-blowing experience of all time, but S & W Country Diner filled my stomach up with good eats and good times. As I took in the cozy space around me I spotted their jelly “stack.”

OMG… How many of you grew up with this stuff??
I haven’t seen the Sierra brand “Mixed Fruit” for YEARS, but I’m so happy that they still make this! The jelly totally reminded me of the olden days when I was small and naive. Now I’m all grown and mature so I prefer my spreads to be in the style of chunky preserves. That’s what we sophisticated womens like: PRESERVES. =) I’m not sure if the “mixed fruit” is supposed to taste like fruit punch or something, because it tastes more like apple jelly to me. I still love it and slopped it heavily on my toast.

The specials. There was a larger menu to choose from (you can see it peeking out from underneath), but we stuck to the specials.

The “Omelette Specials” (Mon-Fri) between the hours of 7-8 am and again from 10-11 am… I guess it’s their idea of “happy hour,” except with breakfast foods… and minus the alcohol (what?? no morning mimosas??). Maybe you can bring in one of those small bottles of champagne and make your own morning libation. Wow. That’s not ghetto at all. Not at all.

Here we go…. the breakfast of champs… nice crispy hash browns and bacon…and an egg over-easy to top it off!! Not sure of the exact price, but it was under $5. The egg was nice and runny so you could sop up the yolk with the crispy hash browns. I prefer these potatoes as opposed to the country potatoes. They’re crispier dangit!

Omelette special w/3 items ($4.95). I chose an egg-white omelette with avocado and turkey as my fillings (meats count as two items). I was trying to recreate the avocado & turkey sandwich from Togo’s, hence the side of tomatoes instead of potatoes. I’m so darn creative! I have to say that this really did remind me of Togo’s #24, bread and all!

There were plenty of chunks of that favorite fruit of mine (yum!). Let’s give a moment of silence to the mighty AVOCADO…… okay, that’s long enough. =)
Would I eat here again? Yes. Would I suggest this place to others? Yessiree bob. Would I wait an hour for a table? Um, probably not… unless both my legs suddenly disappeared and I couldn’t drag my legless body to a nearby cafe/coffee shop. However, the food was good, I loved the homey diner feel of the place, and the prices were easy on my wallet. I’m so glad to have found another place to add to my list of breakfast eats on the westside. S & W Country Diner, you did good, you did good.
