Hanging Out at Aunt Kizzy’s Back Porch

The first time we’d been to Aunt Kizzy’s Back Porch was in search of a pecan pie. Unfortunately, we went out of season and instead got some sweet potato pie, which was one of the best I’ve ever had. Since then, we’ve been meaning to go back.

Pecan pie is still not in season, but we went for the Sunday brunch, which is an all you can eat buffet. Aunt Kizzy’s is tucked away in part of a large strip mall down the street from Costco, and is a bit hard to find. There is also a back entrance as well, which we’ve never used. It’s got a lot of character, with a mockup rural store front when you walk in, and the walls are filled with photos of actors and actresses over the years. The tables have old-style vinyl tablecloths and your drinks come in small mason jars. The staff are very pleasant and they try to make you feel right at home. The buffet is not large - you go to the counter and tell the servers what you want.

We opted to pass on the breakfast food, but tried just about everything else. The main thing is the different meat options, and we tried the fried chicken, the pork chop, and the ribs. The fried chicken had a nice crisp exterior and was extremely tender and juicy – we’re dark meat people so we didn’t ask if breast meat was available. The breaded pork chop was soaked in gravy, and was tender enough that I didn’t even need a knife to cut it. The ribs were impressive, and the sweet BBQ sauce was a perfect complement to the accompanying cornbread and biscuits. That dark stuff in the picture is the meat that has fallen off the bone by itself! We also tried the mac & cheese which had a good crust and a golden cheese sauce that must be due to Velveeta - we ate it up. We did try some healthy food, adding in some green beans, black eyed peas, and collard greens to round out the meal. And of course we didn’t forget our grits.

While the entrée food is good, the desserts are even better. The desserts that day were peach cobbler and sweet potato pie. The sweet potato pie was just as good as we remembered with lots of good nutmeg flavor, while the peach cobbler was tasty with plenty of peaches and missing only some vanilla ice cream.

The portions don’t look big, but by the time we were done we had that same full feeling that you get on Thanksgiving. We wouldn’t say this was the healthiest meal we ever ate, but it was good home-style Southern cooking.
