Two buck tamale!

Hat tip to Erin’s Kitchen for the information on the LA Tamale Festival. Since I don’t live too far away, I decided to check it out.

Check out the LAFB post about last year’s Tamale Festival.

The event is on 7th Street near MacArthur Park.

Like any festival, there are colorful items sold in vendor tents.

Got to wash down those tamales with some ethnic drinks! The drink I had was $2 and was a blend of red punch and sweetened condensed milk and ice.

The chefs hard at work making things for hungry customers. There are, of course, other things besides tamales.

I got my fill of tamales and bought some extra (TEN!) to take home for future lunches and dinners. Tamales cost $2 or $3 depending on type.

The festival continues the rest of Saturday night and on Sunday.

WHEN:
November 10, 11 & 12, 2006
Friday: 3pm - 8pm
Saturday:10am - 9pm
Sunday 11am - 6pm

WHERE
MacArthur Park - Mama’s Hot Tamales Cafe
2124 West 7th Street, Los Angeles, Ca 90057

I didn’t make it to this, but I was able to purchase the prize-winning tamales anyway, as I found out from the tamale guy at my farmer’s market that they had won first prize on Sat.

    Yay!

I went to this one too (and will be blogging it soon) - it doesn’t compare to the Indio one though (which is at least 10 times as big!) — hope you’re going to that ;) (Dec 2-3)

I wanted to go, but just didn’t make it. Thanks very much, Rene, for your report — your pix are fantastic!

^ KT — which tamale guy at which farmer’s market on which day? Details, please! Would like to find him and sample his blue ribbon tamales.

I think the tamale stand is called “Me Gusta” and it’s at the Melrose Place Farmer’s market every Sunday. He told me on Sunday that his veggie tamales and his cheese tamales had won first prize.

Their tamales are really big. One could make a whole meal. The veggie one is full of different vegetables and makes a pretty hearty dinner.

I think they have a store in the Valley as well.

Yes it is Me Gusta Gourmet Tamales. They won first place: pork tamale, vegetarian tamale(cheese with chile strips), sweet tamale(pinapple) they also got the peoples choice award. They will also be in Indio. They do have a store in Pacoima, 13752 Van Nuys Blvd. (818) 896- 8789. You can also find them in many farmers markets through out L.A., Orange and Ventura county.
