Bagels and more on the Westside

Looking for a good bagel outside of New York is often compared to Diogenes looking for an honest man. Since I’m not a New York native, I think good bagels out on our end of the country. There is nothing like starting a day off with a sliced freshly toasted bagel with a shmear of cream cheese in between. I tend to get my fix from the New York Bagel Company, located in Brentwood. They have a great assortment of bagels, and I’m particularly partial to sesame and pumpernickel.

When I pick up bagels, I usually will run in first thing in the morning and grab some to go. I’ve always seen their breakfast menu but I never have had a chance to try it out since I’ve usually been too busy to stop for long. However, we finally got a chance to stop by for a weekend breakfast.

You can’t miss the New York connection, with a huge Empire State metal structure hanging on top of the ceiling. My wife got a pumpernickel bagel with butter and jam plus a side of oatmeal, while I went whole hog for the hash plus a sesame bagel with cream cheese on the side. The hash was quite tasty, a scramble of eggs, corned beef hash (large chunks), and corn flakes (!).

Overall, we thought it was a solid choice if you were sure you were on the Westside hankering for a bagel and wanted a little (well maybe not little based on the plate of hash!) something more. I am curious though if people have other thoughts on good bagel places here in Los Angeles.

I’m partial to the ones from Manhattan Bagel (a smallish chain). Not perfect, but not too bad either (though I usually don’t trust places that have “New York” / “Brooklyn” or whatever in their name.

I usually try to bring a bunch back with me from NJ / NY and then slice & freeze them - this usually lasts for a while, depending on how often I eat them.

H&H does mail order (some other NY places do too); I did this once — maybe it is because they shipped them in plastic bags or something, but they seemed way too soft.
