A cute new bakery, Big Sugar Bakeshop, has just opened on Ventura Street Blvd in Studio City, just west of Laurel Canyon (sort of opposite Mexicali).
So far I’ve been in three times and tried something different each time. The treats here are way more affordable than the deluxe, tiny, two-bite-sized cupcakes from Ledas (which I adore). Prices at Big Sugar are around $2.00 per cupcake. Cookies are $1.00.
I loved the coconut, also the mocha cupcake and especially loved the hummingbird one with its canary yellow icing. Their little “damp ginger cakes are perfectly adorable and delicious.
They have a seemingly inexhaustible variety of treats available. There are small items such as little squares of fudge or small peanut butter buckeyes (although I didn’t try those as I hate peanut butter when it isn’t on a piece of wholewheat toast). In addition to cupcakes they offer two-person pies (such as chocolate mousse or apple crisp) and slices of cake (such as German Chocolate and Red Velvet) and even whole cakes. What I love is their range of sweets, so you can completely satisfy a small to medium to large craving, depending on how you feel that day.
They even have a daily blog with information on their daily specials – how cool is that?
Also, it’s a store as well as a bakery. You can get cards and gifts – candles, coffee beans, tins of fabulous Mariebelle’s hot chocolate, cool aprons and oven mitts – stuff like that.

What a treat to have an old-school bakery in your area. What will our corporate overlords say?
I saw this shop open up while perusing the usual shops by Laurel Canyon and they are indeed quaint and much more affordable than Leda’s. My favorite is the ultra-rich gold rush bars.
This place is FANTASTIC … I suffered from Magnolia Bakery withdrawal when I moved out here and Joan’s and Sprinkles are just too far! I had a custom cake made here last week and it was not only a work of art, but delicious. Check out the buckeyes and Belgian chocolate cupcakes, too.
Loved the cupcakes but the owners are not as friendly as the other shopworkers!
Not a good vibe… but tasty treats!
^ Really? What happened? They are probably pretty stressed out by orders for Valentine’s Day.
I certainly would like to hear specifics.
i love their reverse cookie - so delicious! they have the most adorable retail items (skull and roses apron/mitt).
^ Yeah, don’t they? Actually the nine-year-old daughter, Hana, of one of the owners (Mary) designed the skeleton-themed oven mitts and kitchen accessories.
I recently tried their seven-layer slice that was out of this world and packed with coconut goodness.
So delicious, so divine – so damn close to where I live…
No one has mentioned the over priced tarts at $15 for the small tart at the shop! I’ve had better tarts, for a lot less! The donut muffin was good and tasted very much like a cake donut at a more resonable price (
…ventura street…..mexicalis……??
you must be new in town.
^ LOL!
