Tea With Jam, Jam & Scones…
Friday, February 16, 2007 22:34I’ve always hated scones, ever since I first bit into one. No matter how many times I tried them, they were always hard, dry, and tasteless. My intense disdain for scones ended, however, when I arrived in London and went to afternoon tea. I expected little finger sandwiches and was rather disappointed to find out that I would be getting scones instead. I tried one and found the texture to be soft and moist. It is served with clotted cream and jam, which together were quite heavenly. Imagine my shock when I discovered that I actually love scones… that is, British scones. For some reason, Americans just can not get scones right… until now. My best friend, Melissa, who accompanied me on the London adventure, discovered a company in Santa Cruz that makes scone mixes that basically replicates our British experience.
Melissa has been incredibly thoughtful and has been sending me items from Iveta Gourmet as gifts. For Christmas, she bought me a couple boxes of the apricot scones mix, clotted cream, and lemon curd. For Valentine’s Day, she bought me a couple boxes of the cranberry scones mix, more clotted cream, and strawberry jam. (For those who don’t know what clotted cream is, imagine something like the taste of sweet cream with the texture of creme fraiche.) I decided to share all this goodness with a couple of friends today.
Let me tell you how much work I had to do. I just opened the box, dumped the mix in a bowl, and mixed the contents with about a cup of heavy whipping cream. Yeah, real hard, isn’t it? All that was left was just cutting the dough into slices, putting them on a greased cookie sheet, and tossing them in the oven. (I also sprinkled some raw sugar on top.) 20 minutes later, it was all done, and I looked like a super-hostess to my guests who had just arrived to a house that smelled like a bakery. In addition, my friends loved the scones. This means a lot, especially since one of the guests had lived in London for a while. These scones definitely reminded us of our London experiences. All this with really minimal effort on my part.
Now I know that since this is LA.foodblogging, we don’t usually mention restaurants or companies outside Los Angeles. Iveta Gourmet may not be in LA, but as someone who is currently still working in Siberia, I can tell you Iveta can ship you your order, and even during a heavy snow storm, your order will arrive promptly on time.
