Santa Monica Farmers Market Report For 3/28/07
Wednesday, March 28, 2007 10:17The market was nice today, lots of variety out there. Asparagus at many locations, with one stand having white asparagus (they had sheeting up to have it in the shade). A number of places had artichokes, but I had a hard time finding any cauliflower–i think that season is winding down. Still plenty of citrus out there, with many lemons and tangerines at multiple stands. I tried to buy Perfection tangerines, like I did last week, but they were out so I picked up some tangelos instead. There were a few stands with blood oranges as well. Lots of carrots, snap peas, brussel sprouts, beets and still plenty of dark greens in the stalls, and many places had strawberries. I picked up asparagus, broccoli, grapefruit, tangelos, strawberries, spinach, sugar snap peas, apples, and a few chermoya to try.
I had a good star sighting, I saw Jennifer Garner and her kid, Violet Affleck. She is really cute, but the annoying paparazzi were around trying to get photos running around like crazy people. They are really gross, I felt bad for the mom and baby just trying for a market day.

If you’ve never had cherimoya (aka soursop), you’re in for a treat. Let it get pretty soft, don’t eat the green skin, and be careful of the big black seeds. But the taste — to me, a lovely peach/pineapple mix — is worth the trouble. And it makes the best daiquiri EVER.

Have you found any place with baby artichokes? I read about them in the LA Times food section. I have never tried artichokes before, so I thought this might be a good chance to do so.

You can often get baby artichokes at Trader Joe’s packaged in the vegetable section.
