Santa Monica Farmers Market Report For 6/20/07
Wednesday, June 20, 2007 10:05Just got back from the Santa Monica Wednesday Farmers Market. Summer is in full bloom! Lots of berries, beans and stone fruit. I saw strawberries, ollaliberries, blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries. Plenty of peaches, nectarines, plums and pluots. All varieties of beans–many stands had Blue Lake green beans, some had sugar snap peas, fava beans. I couldn’t find any in-shell English Peas, which was a bummer. Some peppers started to show up- I saw Anaheim’s and bells. A few stands had white corn. Lots of cherry tomatoes and some larger tomatoes, however I know we will not see the large varieties and amounts of heirlooms until later in the summer. Cherries are still out but some cherry stands have closed up shop, so the cherry season is drawing to a close. Asparagus, carrots, beets, onions, plenty of zucchini and squash. I picked up some green beans, sugar snap peas, nectarines, peaches, pluots, apricots, strawberries, and some sweet heart cherries (only 2 bags left when I got to the stand). Summer is definitely here!

Yeah, the return of the Market Report. It all sounds tasty. I was wondering what the corn price was there, been mighty expensive this summer so far with all the ethanol talk.

I didn’t pay close attention, at one stand I saw organic white corn 3 for $2. Pricey but tasty!

Thanks for the report. I didn’t get a chance to go this morning, and feel such regret! Do you happen to know who had the ollaliberries? I asked someone at Pudwill Farms on Saturday if they had them, and was told no. :( I hope to get some before they disappear.

Don’t know the name of the stand with the ollaliberries, but it is the guys who sell potatoes year round, at the intersection of Arizona and the Promenade, South West corner—-next to the AMC Movie Theater.
They have Ollaliberries every summer, today they were $3.50 per basket. Hope they have them when you are next at the market!

Does anyone know where I can buy fresh peanuts in shell (not dried)? Has anyone seen them sold at the SMFM?
Please advise.
Thanks.

I haven’t seen them there. There was someone at the Manhattan Beach market that roasted their peanuts on site. Maybe they would sell you some pre-roast.
