Santa Monica Farmers Market Report for 7/04/07
Wednesday, July 4, 2007 20:26With the 4th of July falling on a Wednesday, I was fortunate enough to accompany our normal Market Reporter (and my wife) to the Santa Monica mega-FarMar. Even with the holiday, most of the regular stands were open for business. Good thing too, since the summer produce season is in full swing.
Stone fruits abound — peaches, nectarines, plums, no cherries, unfortunately. There was a mix of beans — blue lake, yellow wax, fava, some fava looking beans that were purple and white, purple string beans and only a few english peas. There were some berries, but not a lot, we picked up some good looking (and tasting) strawberries.
A Sample of our Bounty:

Clockwise from top left: Green Cauliflower, Strawberries, Peaches, Different Colored Eggplant, Nectarines, Yellow and Purple String Beans, Different Colored Carrots, Plums.
Not shown is some corn, purple cauliflower, spinach, other greens, onions, squash blossoms and some broccoli. It should be a good week of fresh produce around the house, We already grilled up the eggplant and corn, both were quite sweet. We also sauteed the spinach, it was hearty and didn’t reduce as much as some spinach does.
I was glad to stroll the market, our bike baskets were overflowing for the ride home.
