I was excited about trying LA Mill Coffee and convinced a friend to drive to Silver Lake for the must-have coffee. I agree with earlier comments, you really have to shell out a lot of $ for a meal. I found it quite pretentious and leaves a lot to be desired. For a side salad, we were served a paltry finger-full of fraiche and arugala greens for $3 dollars. Not kidding, there was no arugala, and no more than a pinch of greens in a baby-size bowl. Nothing fancy only loads of salt and olive oil. After our entre, we left feeling hungry. It's definitely a coffee place, but not worth the gas! For the same price, your money is better spent at Urth Cafe. For the money, you'll get thoughtful portions, nice plating, flavorful meals and your appetite satisfied. On a lighter note, the decorum is nice and the staff pleasant.

sneakypeteiii ... I think I agree that it's overpriced. That's why it will never be my everyday coffee stop :) I love that saying though ... about eating the carpet and table cloth! IT's SO TRUE!! I have yet to try Intelligentsia ... perhaps this weekend! Thanks for reading :)

I'm glad you enjoyed you LA Mill experience, and those pictures are great. I, unfortunately, did not find it so well.

Now, I'm used to paying a lot for produce, restaurant trips, and especially for unique coffees-of-the-moment. The majority of my meager grad student salary goes towards this stuff, or otherwise getting to it, i.e. food tourism.

I also love Cimarusti's food. I love Providence and everything it's about. It's of my favorite places in town. Yet I have walked away from LA Mill more than once feeling that I overpaid.

I echo drpynchon's sentiment regarding the food, so I'll just focus on the coffee.

Clover's great, but Intelligentsia a mile away is selling it for much less (to say nothing of their diligence in fostering relationships with coffee farmers and promoting environmental stewardship). A pot of siphon coffee for $12? That might be a good price for trying it once, but a siphon brewer costs less than $100 to keep up the habit. And for all the fuss about their signature drinks (six bucks?), mine have never been hot enough; they border on cool to the touch. I even told them about this on opening day, and they haven't fixed it.

We Cantonese have a saying that when you go to an overpriced restaurant, you're eating the carpet and the tablecloth -- but I can never seem shake that feeling at LA Mill, that much of what I'm paying for never sees the plate.

Meh. Go for the coffee. Get a loan first if you're planning on a full meal. For brunch I needed three dishes (total about: $33) and was still hungry afterwards. You order their egg scrambles and guess what you get: 1 scrambled egg for about $10 in an oversized bowl with a few mushrooms. At those prices, a more than decadent full brunch can be had at virtually any place in the city -- Hotel BA, Campanile, what have you.
