I was at this meal, and I think the snark was *very* restrained - the review would have been a lot more interesting / entertaining if she had focused less on the food.

In any event, I think it's reasonable for the readers to realize that the meal reviewed was a PR thing and not typical of the usual reviews posted on this site, where the restaurant generally doesn't know they're being reviewed, the reviewer pays their own tab, and there isn't some loud PR person trying to influence the outcome of the review. I think the conditions under which the review was conducted are very much germane, and if anything, it would have been unethical NOT to mention them.

@Louise, Opinions about food (and writing) are subjective. What you don't like someone else might love, etc. However, as a reader, I found your emotional feelings to be irrelevant to the content and distracting to the overall article, and the snarky tone to take away from your credibility as a reviewer.

@Viable: Actually, you're right. I *was* bashing someone for false praise. Considering that eating at a restaurant is an experience which includes atmosphere, I believe it has some relevance in this review. It's distracting to sit down at a restaurant and have someone chirping in your ear about how amazing every single dish is. Especially when some dishes fall flat.

If Allston is "a fancy pants neighborhood" in Boston, I'm Jimmy Hoffa. I lived in Boston for over seven years and Allston, is at best, a dumpy little suburb where college kids grab up apartments. There are plenty of well-heeled neighborhoods (Beacon Hill, Back Bay), but Allston ain't one of 'em.

If you're gonna dish out a dig, do it for things you actually know what you're talking about.

I think this review is thorough and helpful but doesn't reflect very well on the writer. She almost seems proud to be "bashing" someone for what she insinuates as being false praise for the food, and I've noticed she's praising herself on her blog about it.

As a foodie and eater, this has no relevance to anything. A bit disappointing.

this is a great review! I love to know about hidden spots all over LA. Thanks for the info! I totally agree that when waiters keep telling you how amazing EVERYTHING is, it makes things not as enjoyable, no matter how good the food is. :)
